Aerobic Granular Sludge has recently received growing attention by researchers and technology developers, worldwide. Laboratory studies and preliminary field tests led to the conclusion that granular activated sludge can be readily established and profitably used in activated sludge plants, provided 'correct' process conditions are chosen. But what makes process conditions 'correct'? And what makes granules different from activated sludge flocs? Answers to these question are offered in Aerobic Granular Sludge. Major topics covered in this book include: Reasons and mechanism of aerobic granule formation Structure of the microbial population of aerobic granules Role, composition and physical properties of EPS Diffuse limitation and microbial activity within granules Physio-chemical characteristics Operation and application of granule reactors Scale-up aspects of granular sludge reactors, and case studies Aerobic Granular Sludge provides up-to-date information about a rapidly emerging new technology of biological treatment.

A new development for the treatment of domestic wastewater is a technology based on aerobic granular sludge. Granular sludge can be developed under specific process conditions. Because of the unique properties of this granular sludge, high volumetric loading rates of aeration tanks can be applied. Thanks to excellent settling properties, the separation of treated wastewater and granular sludge can take place at high hydraulic loading rates. Depending on the chosen process configuration good effluent quality can be obtained, complying with the stringent effluent requirements regarding nitrogen and phosphorus, which can be expected in the future. In this way aerobic granular sludge has the potential to contribute significantly to wastewater treatment management. This report describes the results of research carried out at the Technical University of Delft.

Wastewater treatment stands out as a pivotal solution for safeguarding public health and the environment. Aerobic granular sludge, as an alternative to conventional activated sludge, offers superior benefits in treatment efficacy, facility space efficiency, and energy utilization. Despite being a relatively novel approach to wastewater treatment, aerobic granular sludge technology has undergone extensive research over the past two decades. However, its real-world application has not reached the anticipated levels of adoption. Moreover, the impact of various operational strategies and processes on the properties of the granules and the treatment performance for different types of wastewater, especially regarding nutrient removal, remains somewhat ambiguous. This Special Issue discusses the performance of aerobic granular sludge for nutrient removal and pharmaceutical wastewater treatment in continuous or batch operating modes, as well as at laboratory, pilot, and even large scales. A key area of focus is the long-term stability of the aerobic granules. Additionally, this Issue explores the treatment and management of waste aerobic granular sludge using anaerobic digestion. Serving as a concise overview of the current research on aerobic granules, this Special Issue provides an insightful snapshot into the latest advancements in using aerobic granules for environmental protection.

This book describes pathogen removal processes in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) wastewater treatment systems. Faecal indicators (E. coli, Enterococci, coliforms and bacteriophages) were tracked in full-scale AGS facilities and compared to parallel activated sludge (CAS) systems. AGS showed similar removals as the more complex CAS configurations. Removal mechanisms investigated in laboratory-scale reactors showed that the AGS morphology contributes to the removal processes. By tracking E. coli and MS2, it was observed that organisms not attached to the granules are predated by protozoa during aeration. 18S RNA gene analyses confirmed the occurrence of bacterivorous organisms (e.g., Epistylis, Vorticella, Rhogostoma) in the system. Particulate material in the feeding stimulated their development, and a protozoa bloom arose when co-treating with (synthetic) faecal sludge (4 % v/v). An overview of the diverse eukaryotic community in laboratory reactors and real-life applications is also provided. The microbial diversity of the influent was different compared to AGS and CAS sludge samples. However, no clear differences were found between them on species level. This study contributes to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind pathogen removals in AGS systems.

Microbial granules have practical importance in anaerobic and aerobic biological wastewater treatment. Advantages of granules are retention of biomass in reactor, diversity of microorganisms, complex structure, and resistance to unfavorable conditions. Microbial granules can be used to treat municipal and industrial wastewater for removal of organic matter, xenobiotics, nutrients, and heavy metals. The book covers almost all aspects of formation and use of microbial granules in wastewater treatment. The data on aerobic microbial granulation are related mostly to laboratory systems due to few pilot systems in the world using aerobic microbial granules. However, by the analogy with anaerobic granulation, which is now used worldwide, it is possible to predict wide applications of aerobic granulation. This book will help researchers and engineers develop these new biotechnologies of wastewater treatment based on aerobic granulation. Covers all aspects of formation, organization, and use of microbial granules in wastewater treatment Integrates engineering, microbiology, and biotechnology of microbial granules Comprises of deep fundamental data as well as practical information for applications of microbial granules in wastewater treatment
