The papers prepared for the AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel (FDP) Symposium on 'Aerodynamics of Store Integration and Separation', which was held 24-27 April 1995 in Ankara, Turkey are contained in this Report. In addition, a Technical Evaluator's Report aimed at assessing the success of the Symposium in meeting its objectives, and an edited transcript of the General Discussion held at the end of the Symposium are also included. The aim of this symposium was to bring together engineers in the fields of theoretical and experimental aerodynamics, as applied to the store integration problem, to review and discuss the state of the art in the prediction, methodology and experimental techniques currently being developed and applied to the aerodynamics of store carriage and release and to assess new design concepts.

In the early days, store separation tests were conducted in a hit or miss fashion - the stores would he dropped from the aircraft at gradually increasing speeds until the store came close to or sometimes actually hit the aircraft. In some cases, this led to loss of the aircraft, and made some test pilots reluctant to participate in store separation flight test programs. During the 1960's, the Captive Trajectory System (CTS) method for store separation wind tunnel testing was developed. The CTS provided a considerable improvement over the hit or miss method, and became widely used in aircraft/store integration programs prior to flight-testing. However, since fairly small-scale models had to be used in the wind tunnel tests, in many cases, the wind tunnel predictions did not match the flight test results. No mechanism was then in place to resolve the wind tunnel/flight test discrepancies. During this same timeframe, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) had finally matured to the point of providing a trajectory solution for a store in an aircraft flowfield. However, Since the computational tools were necessarily (due to computer resource limitations) limited to linear techniques, and since most store separation problems occur at transonic speeds, these tools had limited application. Recent advances in computer resources have greatly improved the capability of CFD to predict store release characteristics. Instead of using linear or approximate schemes, time dependent Euler and Navier Stokes trajectories could he computed in a reasonable timeframe. Three international CFD challenges, held during the last decade of the 20th century, have shown that CFD cannot only match wind tunnel test data, but also predict flight test trajectories for complex stores at transonic speeds. It appears that CFD has matured to the point that it can be usefully integrated into aircraft/store compatibility programs.

Validation And Expansion Of The Flow Angularity Technique For Predicting Store Separation Trajectories written by Stephen C. Korn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1972 with Bomb racks categories.

This report documents the external flow fields caused by various weapon configurations on the wing of an F-4 aircraft, verifies assumptions made in the flow angularity technique, and presents the documentation for the 'Flow Angularity Computer Program' with example trajectories. The flow angularity program is presently capable of calculating the trajectories of stores off the inboard and outboard wing stations in either single, triple ejector rack, or multiple ejector rack configurations. The assumptions made in the flow angularity technique have been analyzed and generally validated as good approximations. (Author).

Tests were conducted in the VKF/A and PWT/4T wind tunnels at AEDC to obtain captive trajectory, aerodynamic loads, and flowfield data in order to assess the ability to reproduce trajectories from tunnel to tunnel. The data were obtained with a 0.05-scale generalized shape aircraft model, an ogive-cylinder store model, and conical flow survey probes at and near the centerline fuselage station pylon and the wing 1/3-semispan station pylon. The tests were conducted at a Mach number of 1.63 with aircraft model angle of attack set at zero. Generally, the trajectories obtained in the two wind tunnels compared well. There was very good agreement in the translational motion of the store trajectories, with only slight differences in the angular motion in selected cases. (Author).

First, system identification is used to determine a parametric model for the spatially variant aerodynamics. Second, the store separation problem is recast into a trajectory optimization problem, and optimal control theory is used to establish a framework for designing a suitable reference trajectory with explicit dependence on the spatially variant aerodynamics. Third, neighboring optimal control is used to construct a linear-optimal feedback controller for correcting deviations from the nominal reference trajectory due varying initial conditions, modeling errors, and flowfield perturbations. An extended case study based on actual wind tunnel and flight test measurements is used throughout to illustrate the effectiveness of the approach and to highlight the anticipated benefits of guided store separation.

Fluid-structure interactions (FSI) that involve nonlinear aerodynamic forces are described which affect both aging aircraft, as well as new aircraft. Several cases are presented which contain aerodynamic non linearities that are important in the FSI process and that require different solution approaches from those taken for linear FSI problems. A time-dependent approach is presented which is based on a semi empirical nonlinear aerodynamic model that is fully coupled with the aircraft elastic equations of motion. An early version of this methodology is applied to a wide variety of Limit Cycle Oscillation (LCO) cases for a fighter configuration carrying large underwing stores. The new method is applied to three classes of problems: (1) LCO for bomber and transport type configurations; (2) LCO for a fighter wing; and (3) large amplitude buffet response of a fin subject to server wake turbulence.
