Fields of past and present activity related to the developement of operationally safe release envelopes for stores separating from aircraft in flight are surveyed. Various available theoretical methods for determining the complex interfering flow fields around aircraft-store combinations are examined, and some show promise sufficient to warrant further development on a priority basis. Available wind tunnel scale testing techniques are described. A degree of uncertainty remains as to the accuracy with which wind tunnel data can be employed to represent full-scale flight conditions. It is probable that much of the existing correlation data between full-scale experience and wind tunnel testing, is invalid or inconclusive. Extensive flight testing, cumbersome and expensive, must still be employed at the present time for complete and final certification of store separation envelopes. There is a great need for a general mathematical model amd computational capability that can describe the separation motion of stores from aircraft readily and accurately. (Author).

This paper reviews developments in the field of store carriage and separation. First, the Store Separation Program Plan, a long term effort carried out at NWC, China Lake, is summarized, and then corresponding efforts are reviewed from a wide variety of sources. The recommendations of the NWC study are, with some changes in emphasis, still valid in this rapidly changing technological environment, but especially important is the recommendation of accelerating efforts to apply transonic techniques. European literature suggests a greater application of analytical techniques to this field than corresponding United States literature. There is still a strong requirement for high quality experimental data suitable for rigorous comparisons and critical correlations. (Author).

This AGARDograph is a systematic collection of experimental results for use of engineers and designers, limited to externally carried, unpowered, unguided stores. In the sections dealing with store trajectories, the physical situation is described, the method of solution is indicated, and the final results are presented. Emphasis is on store motion in traversing the parent aircraft flowfield, with criteria for safe separation and methods of calculating flight path. Windtunnel test techniques are described, and some information on flight testing given. Analytical treatment is compared with flight and tunnel results. There are brief mentions of ejection systems and the effect of stores on aircraft performance.

A method is being developed for solving the store separation trajectory problem by flow angularity techniques. This approach uses experimentally measured interference flow field data coupled with store free stream aerodynamic coefficients. Presently, the flow field about the inboard triple ejector rack loaded with M-117 bombs at Mach 0.85 on the F-4 aircraft is being used to predict the trajectory of other stores launched from the inboard triple ejector rack at subsonic and transonic Mach numbers. Sample comparisons of trajectories produced by the captive trajectory system are presented. This technique allows calculation of the trajectory until the store impacts on the ground. Sample miss distances caused by the interference flow field calculated using the flow angularity technique are presented for the M-117 bomb. (Author).

The mathematical equations of motion for ground simulation of the separation trajectories of stores from aircraft are developed in this document. The equations have application to both analytical and wind tunnel captive trajectory store separation testing. The equations of motion as presented here include features not previously available in AEDC analytical and wind tunnel simulations such as arbitrary aircraft maneuvers, more rigorous models of the specific pivot hardware used by some aircraft, and downrail motions with all components of kinematic acceleration (including Corlolis effects) modeled. The data reduction equations for free-falling instrumented store models are also included.

A system was developed to obtain and process wind-tunnel test data on a store in the presence of an airplane, so that the data could be used by a digital computer to predict store separation characteristics following launch. A separation was computed by the grid method using these data, for comparison with a trajectory obtained by the point prediction method. These trajectories were in good agreement. Trajectories were also analyzed to determine the effect of various separation parameters. (Author).
