Violet Paget (1856–1935), also known under the pseudonym Vernon Lee, was a French-born British writer famous for her supernatural fiction and contributions to the field of aesthetics. She also wrote more than a dozen books on a variety of subjects ranging from music to travel, and today she is best remembered for her original ideas and amusing use of irony. First published in 1913, “The Beautiful - An Introduction to Psychological Aesthetics” is a collection of classic essays by Paget that explore the issue of beauty from a variety of angles, analysing the very nature of beauty and why it is enjoyed. Contents include: “The Adjective 'Beautiful'”, “Contemplative Satisfaction”, “Aspects Versus Things”, “Sensations”, “Perception of Relations”, “Elements of Shape”, “Facility and Difficulty of Grasping”, “Subject and Object”, “Empathy”, “The Movement of Lines”, “The Character of Shapes”, etc. Other notable works by this author include: “The Prince of the Hundred Soups: A Puppet Show in Narrative” (1883), “The Countess of Albany” (1884), and “Miss Brown” (1884). Read & Co. Science is proudly republishing this collection of classic essays now in a new edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

Philosophers and art critics have often found themselves pulled in two directions when they reflect on judgements about aesthetic properties and aesthetic value. On the one hand, every aesthetic judgement seems as good as any other. If, say, you like Justin Bieber, who is to say that your judgement that Bieber's music is great is wrong? On the other hand, the judgement that Bieber's oeuvre is greater than that of J.S. Bach seems to be clearly mistaken. This volumebrings together some of the leading contemporary philosophers of art and philosophers of language to debate the status of aesthetic judgements. Are they simply expressions of personal preference? Isthere more basis for saying that a painting is beautiful or serene than there is for saying that a cake is tasty? Is disagreement about aesthetic judgements faultless or can someone be mistaken about the aesthetic value of an artwork?

Aesthetic Concepts written by Emily Brady and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Philosophy categories.

Aesthetic Concepts is an exploration of key topics in contemporary aesthetics that arise from the seminal work of Frank Sibley (1923-1996). Sibley developed a distinctive aesthetic theory through a number of papers published between 1955 and 1995 (a selection of which, entitled Approach toAesthetics, is also published by OUP). Sibley's theory is grounded in the important and influential distinction he made between aesthetic and non-aesthetic concepts in his ground-breaking paper, 'Aesthetic Concepts'. Thirteen specially written essays by British and American philosophical aestheticians bring Sibley's insight into a contemporary framework, exploring the ways his ideas give rise to important new discussion about issues in aesthetics that greatly interested him. These include: the differences andrelationships between aesthetic concepts and other types of concepts, aesthetic realism and objectivity, methods of aesthetic evaluation in practice and in theory, the boundaries of aesthetics, and aesthetics of nature versus aesthetics of art. This collection will be of interest to scholars inphilosophy, art theory, and art criticism.

Approach To Aesthetics written by Frank Sibley and has been published by Clarendon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-05-24 with Philosophy categories.

Approach to Aesthetics is the complete collection of Frank Sibley's articles on philosophical aesthetics. Their appearance within a single volume will be welcome to scholars and students of aesthetics. The value of the book is greatly enhanced by the inclusion of five substantial papers written in his later years and hitherto unpublished. Most of the published papers are concerned with a group of related topics: the nature of aesthetic qualities and their relation to non-aesthetic qualities, the relation of aesthetic description to aesthetic evaluation, the different levels of evaluation, the objectivity of aesthetic judgement. The later papers constitute both a continuation and a significant development of Sibley's individual approach to aesthetics. One group of papers discusses the distinction between attributive and predicative uses of adjectives, first elucidating the distinction, and then considering its application to 'beautiful' and 'ugly'. Another major paper is an extensive study of the aesthetic significance of tastes and smells, a topic Sibley considered to be much neglected, whose examination could throw interesting light on the boundaries of the concept of the aesthetic. This collection constitutes a wide ranging yet coherent account of aesthetics by one of the most acute philosophical minds of his generation, one which is and will continue to be a source of controversy and a model of analytical method.

The digital age has exercised considerable influence not only on language use but also on research and teaching in this field. The present volume showcases some aspects of language-related investigation that reflect the interests, experiences, and challenges of theorists, practitioners, and language instructors today. Drawing on the linguistic corpus, parallel texts in different languages and a variety of approaches and methodologies, the book features three main lines of inquiry: L1 syntactic structure, L1-L2 contact and transfer, and L2 pedagogy. The use of case-studies and authentic data makes Language and Communication in the Digital Age a valuable source of insights into some linguistic peculiarities of Romanian and English, and highlights new research avenues for specialists in language and communication.
