The digital age has exercised considerable influence not only on language use but also on research and teaching in this field. The present volume showcases some aspects of language-related investigation that reflect the interests, experiences, and challenges of theorists, practitioners, and language instructors today. Drawing on the linguistic corpus, parallel texts in different languages and a variety of approaches and methodologies, the book features three main lines of inquiry: L1 syntactic structure, L1-L2 contact and transfer, and L2 pedagogy. The use of case-studies and authentic data makes Language and Communication in the Digital Age a valuable source of insights into some linguistic peculiarities of Romanian and English, and highlights new research avenues for specialists in language and communication.

This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. It addresses educators, journalists, politicians, language communities and others. The availability and use of language technology in Europe varies between languages. Consequently, the actions that are required to further support research and development of language technologies also differ for each language. The required actions depend on many factors, such as the complexity of a given language and the size of its community. META-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission, has conducted an analysis of current language resources and technologies. This analysis focused on the 23 official European languages as well as other important national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailed expert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of additional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders from commercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology providers and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020.

In this groundbreaking book, Pasquale De Marco delves into the profound impact of the Internet on our world, exploring its transformative effects on communication, education, work, government, the economy, culture, health, the environment, and the future of society itself. With its vast network of interconnected devices, the Internet has created a global village where information and ideas flow freely across borders, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries. It has facilitated the exchange of knowledge and fostered collaboration on a scale never seen before, opening up new avenues for education, research, and creative expression. At the same time, the Internet has raised concerns about privacy, data security, and the spread of misinformation, requiring us to navigate a complex landscape of both opportunities and risks. The Internet has transformed traditional notions of work, enabling remote work, flexible schedules, and the rise of the gig economy. While these changes have brought greater flexibility and autonomy to workers, they have also introduced new challenges related to job security, work-life balance, and the erosion of labor protections. This book examines these challenges and offers insights into how we can shape the future of work in a way that benefits all stakeholders. The impact of the Internet on government and democracy is also explored. The book highlights the potential of the Internet to empower citizens, hold leaders accountable, and facilitate civic engagement. However, it also addresses the challenges posed by the spread of misinformation and the use of social media to manipulate public opinion. The book provides a nuanced analysis of the complex relationship between the Internet and democracy, offering recommendations for harnessing its potential while mitigating its negative consequences. The New Language: A Guide for the Digital Age is a comprehensive and thought-provoking examination of the Internet's impact on various aspects of our lives. It is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the profound changes brought about by this transformative technology and the challenges and opportunities it presents for the future.
