This book explores the tensions between aesthetics, gender, and disability in contemporary digital media installations and performance art. Notions of agency and subjectivity are connected to four contemporary political issues (artificial intelligence, migration and political violence, contemporary medical technologies and practices, and the Anthropocene) and analyzed against a Western legacy of utopian and dystopian ideas and desires that have shaped, and continue to shape, what it means to be human. The book’s main argument is that agency and subjectivity are not universal attributes; rather they are socio-material entanglements and contextually bound enactments that are strategically negotiated by the subject. Thus, they involve conflict, struggle, and other forms of resistance. Liz Kim traces the theories and artistic practices that articulated American experimental video through its key works and events, art critical discourse, as well as the politics of its funding and distribution during the 1970s into the 1980s, focusing on New York. This is a historical examination of the relationship between experimental video and postmodernism in the context of the early New York video scene as a foundational crucible of ideas and practices. Video grew out of both the acculturation of television, as well as the resistance against its hegemonic forms, as it enabled hybrid user-generated content. As such, video became a testing ground for postmodern thought, as it sat at the perfect nexus of mass media, art, and the politics of representation. George Smith argues that modern humanity suffers from a late-stage, pre-fatal addiction to scientific-technological thinking. Like most pre-fatal addictions, this one will most likely result in one of three ways: misery, extinction, or human transformation. The question remains, wherein lies the third way? According to Smith, mankind’s chronic and as yet undiagnosed sickness originates in early Western metaphysics and has long been thoroughly globalized. It explains unstoppable extractionism and its relentlessly increasing by-product, carbon dioxide. It also explains today’s ever-increasing rate of species extinction and the increasingly likely collapse of the biosphere. Citing climate change tolerance and denial as symptomatic of pre-fatal addiction, Smith turns his analysis to Heidegger’s "question concerning technology" and shows that even Heidegger had become "hooked" on scientific-technological thinking. Surrendering to his disease, Heidegger "steps back" into "meditative thought." This in turn opens Heidegger to an East-West mode of scientific-poetic consciousness, the thinking of artist-philosophers such as Laozi, Hölderlin, and Rachel Carson. For Heidegger, this way of thinking lays the path to mankind’s transformative emancipation from an otherwise inescapable catastrophe. Artificial Hells is the first historical and theoretical overview of socially engaged participatory art, known in the US as “social practice.” Claire Bishop follows the trajectory of twentieth-century art and examines key moments in the development of a participatory aesthetic. This itinerary takes in Futurism and Dada; the Situationist International; Happenings in Eastern Europe, Argentina and Paris; the 1970s Community Arts Movement; and the Artists Placement Group.
