First published in 1938, this book aims to be a ‘true and objective’ account of China’s recent history and its present circumstances at the time, drawing on the author’s thirty years of experience as a member of the British consular service in China. The recurrent themes of the period are examined: the efforts of the Chinese leadership to build a new China out of the ruins of the old, their efforts to claim a place of equality among the nations of the world, and the development of the conflict between a resurgent China and the ambitions of Japan. Some of the issues studied were in the process of change and others definitely closed by war — nearly all were affected to some degree.

The Dynamics Of Foreign Policy Decisionmaking In China written by Ning Lu and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-19 with Political Science categories.

Lu Ning, former assistant to a vice-foreign minister of China, draws on archival materials, interviews, and personal experiences, to provide unique insights into the formal and informal structures, processes, mechanisms, and dynamics of--and key players in--foreign-policy decisionmaking in Beijing. Lu Ning sheds light on controversial decisions that were made, such as China's entering the Korean War, selling DF-3 missiles to Saudi Arabia in 1986, and cooperating with the Israeli defense establishment.Lu Ning divulges the inner workings of Beijing's foreign ministry, introduces new Chinese language sources, and presents a series of case studies that challenge existing Western theoretical analysis of Chinese policymaking. Based on his examination of the past forty years, Lu Ning makes predictions about likely changes in Beijing's leadership and in its foreign-policy decisionmaking process. This accessibly written, incisive book will be invaluable to anyone interested in Sinology, Chinese foreign policy, comparative foreign policy, and contemporary international relations of East Asia. This second edition contains a fully revised Introduction, and it has been updated through President Clinton's recent visit to China. The new edition also contains new material on the Clinton Administration's varying policy positions toward China.

What were the new People's Republic of China's policies to the Universal Postal Union in its early years? How did they help China promote its national interests in the world stage? Why did China train Albanian interns in the Cold War? Was it out of "communist fraternity" or was it part of China's concerted public diplomacy efforts? And what role has China's medical assistance to developing countries, especially those in Africa, played in its foreign affairs? Penned by well-known international relations scholars from China, the eight essays in this volume attempt to answer those questions and more. Based on rich literature, including some newly declassified files from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this volume introduces some of the most interesting and significant, but lesser-known, episodes in the diplomatic history of the People's Republic of China, and tries to shed light on their implications and impact on China's diplomacy. Contents:Revolutionary Patriotism: China's Policies to the UPU (1950–1951) (Han Changqing and Yao Baihui)A Relook at China's Policy to Assist Vietnam in Its Resistance War Against France (Niu Jun)The Sino-Albania Alliance Revisited: The Role of Ideology in Alliance Formation and Disintegration (Cheng Xiaohe)Diplomatic Commitment and Strategic Communication and Testing: Vance's Visit to China and the Normalization of China–US Diplomatic Relations (Han Changqing and Wu Wencheng)China's Economic Aid to the DPRK after the Sino-Soviet Split (1961–1965) (Dong Jie)Ideology and Public Diplomacy-Interpreting China's Training Program for Albanian Interns during the Cold War (Jiang Huajie)Ideological Output in Technical Assistance: China's Political and Ideological Education towards Vietnamese Interns in China in the Cold War Period (You Lan)Chinese Medical Team Abroad for Assistance: History, Achievement and Impact (Li Anshan) Readership: Students, researchers, and academics who are interested in China's foreign affairs, diplomacy, and diplomatic history.

Shaping China S Future In World Affairs written by Robert G Sutter and has been published by Westview Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996-05-23 with History categories.

This book considers Chinese foreign policy and China's future role in world affairs in the context of the country's recent past. Robert Sutter shows that although it appears to be in U.S. interests for post-Mao leaders to continue moving toward international norms, a post-Deng leadership backed by growing economic and military power and reflecting profound changes in China's economy and society could move in markedly different directions. Most foreign powers appear willing to accommodate China, avoiding actions that could prompt a sharp shift in Chinese foreign policy, but Sutter argues that current U.S. policy intrudes on so many issues that are particularly sensitive for Beijing and for China's future that it represents perhaps the most critical variable determining how China will position itself in world affairs. Concluding that there is no guarantee the United States will use this influence wisely, Sutter examines the uncertainty and unpredictability of U.S. foreign policy in the post–Cold War environment that work against the creation of an effective U.S. policy toward China.
