If you ever wondered what you would do if someone called you and asked if you 'would like to change the destiny of a nation' then reading this journal is for you. I was 58 years old when I received just this call. I decided to write and maintain a daily journal to capture all the emotions of deploying to a nation at war where I was tasked with developing the Afghanistan Ministry of Interior officials in budget development and execution for the nation's police force. The journal entries begin in June 2011 and end October 2014. Due to the sheer volume of the entries they are being presented in several volumes. You will be bored with some, laugh with some, say 'You can't make this shit up' with some, terrified by the close proximity of bombs and gunfire with some and even a death threat. War is not always action. Building the financial infrastructure to pay for the operations of the entire national police force isn't necessarily 'sexy' or 'intriguing'. But I think you will agree that this was an adventure worth taking. You will get an idea of how the Billions of our tax dollars were used to train, equip and pay for the operations of the Afghanistan National Police Force. You will get an idea of what it is like for a woman to interact with the Afghan Ministry personnel in a society and culture where women are not recognized. I was primarily assigned to work with the Ministry of Interior Finance and Budget office but our interactions with the Ministry of Finance were crucial to achieving our goals.

During the First Anglo-Afghan War, Lady Florentia Sale, wife of a British army officer, Sir Robert Henry Sale, was kidnapped in 1842, along with other women and children, as well as soldiers, and detained for nine months. The group were taken hostage by Akbar Khan, following the massacre in the Khurd Karbul Pass. Amongst the hostages with Lady Sale was her youngest daughter Alexandrina, Alexandrina’s husband Lt. John Sturt, and their newborn daughter. Sturt was fatally injured by three dagger wounds to the abdomen, with Lady Sale nursed her son-in-law in his final hours. She bribed the Afghan officers into releasing them, and they were rescued by Sir Richmond Shakespear on 17 September 1842. Her courageous and defiant actions meant that she endangered herself frequently; she was shot in the wrist, with the bullet lodging there. Throughout her time as a captive, Lady Sale kept a diary, detailing the events of the ordeal. A year later, Lady Sale published her journal as A Journal of the Disasters in Afghanistan, 1841-2, which documented her experiences throughout the Afghan War, and the book received critical acclaim. An action-filled story of folly, indecision, treachery and tragedy, all the while testifying to great courage and fortitude.

The coldest I have ever been in my life was in the mountains of Afghanistan. I was in a helicopter with the windows and doors open. It was dark, the middle of winter, and I wasn't wearing a jacket. But up there, something became clear to me: America is fighting its wars all wrong.... Thus starts Joshua Foust's riveting and thoughtful account of the U.S. military's engagement in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010. In early 2009, Foust, a long-time analyst of Central Asian affairs and a respected blogger, got his first chance to go to the country he had been fascinated with for so long. He brought to the trip-- and to this book-- not just a wealth of knowledge about the country, but also an intelligence and sensitivity that informed all his writings during and after the trip.

The first Afghan War of 1838-1842 witnessed one of the greatest defeats ever inflicted upon the British by an Asian enemy. This was the retreat from Kabul. On 6 January 1842, a force that with its followers numbered some 16,000 marched from Kabul under an illusory safe conduct; one week later Surgeon William Brydon rode alone into Jellalabad - apart from the few prisoners, the only British survivor. The rest, men, women, and children, lay dead along the ninety mile route, some killed by the ruthless Afghan enemy, the rest frozen to death in the snow. Of all the participants in the tragedy none has told the story better than Florentia, Lady Sale. Almost the archetype of the 'General's Lady', she was the wife of the doughty second-in-command at Kabul, Sir Robert Sale. Her journal begins in September 1841 when the whole position of the British, and the butterfly social existence they led in the Kabul cantonments, was menaced both by Afghan intrigue and by the incompetence oftheir own command. The journal ends a year later with the romantically appropriate rescue of Florentia by her own husband from nine months' captivity in Afghan hands. In the intervening period she had undergone the dangers of siege, the shame of capitulation and the horror of retreat; had witnessed battle, murder, and sudden death, had been exposed to freezing cold and burning heat, had endured the discomforts of vermin-infested lodgings and the terror of incessant earthquakes. All that humanity and nature could do to molest her was recorded with a laconic imperturbability and an occasional flash of sardonic humour.
