Many of our long-held beliefs about living in desert climates have been made obsolete in recent years. Recent scientific studies on water and heat exchanged in the human body make the old desert theories about thirst and ancient ideas on desert travel as out of date today as a Model T Ford or a World War I Jenny aircraft. Afoot in the Desert is written to bring men in the Air Force up to date on desert living conditions. It is intended to provide basic information for escape and evasion in desert regions. It makes available the most recent, reliable information concerning survival needs of the human body in the deserts of the world. There are numerous survival hints for you and me in the way desert plants and desert animals have adapted themselves to dry climate living. Afoot in the Desert shows you some of the lessons taught by plants and animals which have adjusted to life in dry climates. It gives you some idea of what to expect if you are forced down in these areas and find it necessary to live there until you can make it back to home and sweetheart. Unfortunately the space available does not permit descriptions of the beauty, the fascination, and the charm of the world's great deserts. Neither does it allow for details about the interesting peoples who live in deserts. However, the information presented will make it easier for you to land, to live, and travel afoot in the desert. At the time of original publication Alonzo W. Pond was Chief of the Desert Branch of the Arctic, Desert, Tropic Information Center at the Air University.

Afoot in the Desert, Desert Survival, Deserts of the World Marine Corps Field Manual (FMFRP 0-53) provides information about individual survival in desert theaters of operation. This manual explains some scientific theories on how plants, animals, and humans adapt to dry climates. It deepens understanding of how individuals may live, travel, and conduct themselves with others they may meet in the deserts. A survival expert once said, "The Arabs don't know much about survival in the desert." Of course not! They just live there! You can live there too if you get rid of fear, forget the superstitions and popular fallacies you learned from desert adventure romances, and know a few of the facts of life about deserts. Respect the desert but don't be afraid of it. Don't keep water in your canteen and weaken yourself when you can drink that water and maintain your efficiency. Would you be so foolish as to sap your strength by purposely cutting an artery just so you could practice using a tourniquet? Of course not. Learn the facts about your body needs of water and practice the horse sense those facts will give you. Separate truth from the old wives' tales about the lands of little water. If you do that, you may get to like the desert instead of fearing it.

Sun Sand And Survival An Analysis Of Survival Experiences In Desert Areas written by Dr Richard A. Howard and has been published by Pickle Partners Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-11-06 with History categories.

Desert survival presents unique problems not met in other non-temperate areas. Recognizing this, the Arctic, Desert, Tropic Information Center commissioned Dr. Richard A. Howard to assemble and analyze desert survival experiences of World War II, for the purpose of increasing our knowledge of desert survival techniques and procedures. To know what World War II survivors did, what they thought, and what they recommended after having experienced desert survival conditions is of paramount importance. Sun, Sand and Survival relates and evaluates these experiences. Dr. Howard, ADTIC consultant, has had long experience in the survival training of military personnel. He is the author of the ADTIC Publication T-100 999 Survived which analyzes 1,000 tropical survival experiences. Dr. Howard’s desert study analyzes 382 successful desert survival episodes and mention is made of an additional 142 individuals who were lost. The stories show how men without desert background or mental conditioning met their desert problems. They include examples of men who left their group and were never heard of again. In the light of our present knowledge of the water requirements of the human body, we know that many could have survived had they had a better understanding of the requirements imposed by the desert. More survivors would have returned in better health and endured less discomfort if advance knowledge had been readily available.
