The Hidden Power In African Football written by Delavil Lekunze and has been published by Authors Online Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Sports & Recreation categories.

The book is an insight into the unending intrigues, fraud, treachery, mismanagement, corruption, segregation, unfair trials and tribulations that African football has suffered over the years on the soccer superhighway, and her ceaseless struggle to overcome and establish a reputation of her own. It also examines the hidden power in African soccer that can be exploited to foster development in the continent, after carrying out investigation to bring out some untold stories that many people would like to know about. For almost half a century, Africa has served as a reservoir of celebrated football talents who operate in renowned first class clubs in some Northern countries. In these foreign teams, they have seduced football lovers with fascinating spectacles. Their performances have driven them to central stage where, they are bargained for, at skyrocketing prices. But, in spite of all this, African soccer is still neglected and snubbed by not only its managers, but also by beneficiaries of its products. It keeps going through all kinds of trials and tribulations as the international community rates it below standard, as infrastructure and other amenities required for its growth are lacking, and as its masters sometimes grossly mismanage their football industry. It continues to be marginalised by the movers and shakers of soccer both at continental and global levels irrespective of FIFA's slogan "Football for all and all for football." This has, however, not discouraged some African football actors from making tremendous sacrifices that have gone a long way to get the continent's soccer move forward That is why today, it is able to make major breakthroughs that are shattering the mythsand the superiority complex that has surrounded football and impose itself. As football has become the world's third largest industry very few people or country are indifferent to it these days. It appears there is no longer any age, sex, cultural or class barrier as far as loving the game is concerned. Can we imagine what the world would be like today without football ? The book in turn takes up Africa's first faltering attempts participating in the World Cup competitions, her take off in 1990, the 1994 fiasco, the 1998 saga, the period between 2002-2006, her management upheavals, and ends up with a projection into the future of football in the continent. African football has indeed come a long way!

"This is the first book to take an in-depth look at women's football in Africa. Exploring the history, contemporary landscape and future development of the women's game on the African continent, the book offers an important new perspective on the rise of women's sport more broadly. The book traces the history of women's soccer in Africa from its introduction during the period of European colonisation and it's subsequent ban by colonial authorities, through to the present day period of rapidly increasing spectatorship, rising participation rates and growing media interest. It reflects on the social obstacles to girls' participation, including socio-cultural and religious barriers, as well as important social issues in football such as homophobia, discrimination and abuse, and considers why certain countries have dominated African competitions, including Nigeria, Ghana and, latterly, South Africa, Equitorial Guinea and Cameroon. The book also examines the crucial role played by youth academies, and FIFA's leadership role, and considers the challenges faced by African players, clubs and countries on the global stage. This is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in football, sport history, women's sport, Africa, development studies, or the relationships between sport and wider society"--

This book explores the role of FIFA in brokering the development of football in Africa and its relationship with that continent's football associations and regional governing body. Africa is no longer on the periphery of world football but the economic disparities between the first and the third worlds hinder the development of the game. The author shows convincingly how Africa's advance within world football is tied to its national political economy and how the balance of power within FIFA still clearly favours its European members.

World football has undergone unprecedented change over the past decade. On the field, the richest European clubs have retained their pre-eminence, but with multinational playing squads backed up by global marketing industries. Club ownership rests increasingly with impersonal shareholders, rather than local business figures. Domestic and international football competitions are being transformed by the financial power of the mass media. The world's top players are paid far more than their peers from previous eras. This volume covers a wide range of topical issues which football players, fans and administrators will have to confront in the years to come.

Football, in many ways, is a visual endeavour. From the visual experience within the stadium itself to worldwide media representations, from advertisements to football art and artefacts: football is much about seeing and being seen, about watching, making visual and being visualised. The FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa has turned into a perfect example of the visual dimensions of football. Stadiums have been built and marketed as tourist attractions, mass media and internet platforms are advertising South African cities and venues, logos and emblems are displayed and celebrated, exhibitions are organised in museums world-wide. This book explores the social, cultural and political role of football in Africa by focusing on the issue of its visibility and invisibility. The contributions consider the history and present of football in different parts of Africa. They examine historical and recent pictures and images of football and football players, as well as places and spaces of their production and perception. They analyse the visual dimensions expressed in sports infrastructure, football media-scapes, and in expressive and material arts. This book thus contributes to the growing interest in football in Africa by exploring a new field of research into sports. This book was previously published as a special issue of Soccer and Society.

A superb portrait of the divided continent of Africa, told through one of the few things that unites it. Football inspires competition and inflames passions nowhere as strongly as in Africa. Take the player born and raised in Congo who scored the winning goal for Rwanda against the country of his birth and promptly had his house burnt down for his trouble. Or the Kenyan football chant ‘Oliech! Odinga! Obama!’, which celebrates the country’s star striker, its popular prime minister and its most famous adopted son. Meanwhile, the influence of African football continues to spread rapidly through Europe. Today, no Premiership team is complete without a major African star – Drogba, Essien, Touré, Adebayor, and Kanu. Countless African players are now enriching English football and becoming household names. Steve Bloomfield’s wide-ranging and incisive book investigates Africa’s love of football, its increasing global influence, the build-up to the 2010 WORLD Cup and the social and political backdrop to the greatest show on earth.

“If in the past the Sahara divided us, now it unites us,” Kwame Nkrumah declared more than half a century ago. Keenly aware of Africa’s many artificial divides, Nkrumah was determined to lead a revolution that would bridge them. One way to achieve this goal, Nkrumah proposed, was a continental pan-African government, which would provide the African people with the opportunity to pool and marshal their enormous real and potential economic, human and natural resources for the optimal development of their continent. A continental union government, Nkrumah was convinced, would ensure that Africa ended the divisions created by the trilogy of the enslavement, colonization and neo-colonization of Africans. Nkrumah was concerned by other divisions as well, specifically those created by time, history, nature, and, above all, Africans themselves, such as ethnic, racial and religious discrimination, classism, sexism, and ageism, as well as atavistic and backward traditional practices, including “tribalism” and patriarchy. Africa’s Many Divides and Africa’s Future: Pursuing Nkrumah’s Vision of Pan-Africanism in an Era of Globalization is a collection of papers presented at the first and second Kwame Nkrumah International Conferences. This volume contextualizes Nkrumah’s pan-Africanist agenda within the neo-liberal global project and against the backdrop of the current global economic and political ferment.
