One of America's most prominent worship leaders allows us to go on a liturgical journey with him. Out of his experience, Bishop Frederick Hilborn Talbot provides an exciting and useful guide for church leaders who understand that revitalizing worship is central to revitalizing the church itself. In African American Worship: New Eyes for Seeing, Talbot balances the cultural setting of African American churches and the wider experience of the church universal through the ages. He draws together his own wide and long experience, African background, Caribbean and United States churches, as well as the strong influence of the Wesleyan Revival. Outstanding church leaders, scholars in theology, and pastors commend this exceptional account of the African American experience of worship as a model for the future for churches of all denominations.

Towards Liturgies That Reconcile written by Scott Haldeman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-05 with Religion categories.

Towards Liturgies that Reconcile reflects upon Christian worship as it is shaped, and mis-shaped, by human prejudice, specifically by racism. African Americans and European Americans have lived together for 400 years on the continent of North America, but they have done so as slave and master, outsider and insider, oppressed and oppressor. Scott Haldeman traces the development of Protestant worship among whites and blacks, showing that the following exist in tension: African American and European American Protestant liturgical traditions are both interdependent and distinct; and that multicultural communities must both understand and celebrate the uniqueness of various member groups while also accepting the risk and possibility of praying themselves into an integrated body, one new culture.

A Precious Fountain is a work of liturgical ethnography that probes the rich liturgical life of one worshiping community whose roots and practices are at once Black and Catholic, using music as a primary lens through which to explore the community's liturgy and embodied theology. Our Lady of Lourdes community in San Francisco is part of a larger event in the American church: the emergence of a new paradigm of Catholic worship, one that is "authentically Black and truly Catholic." Mary E. McGann, RSCJ, describes how the music worship of Our Lady of Lourdes in San Francisco not only enriches that community but also is an example of how a theology of music is practiced in that parish. She offers this new genre of liturgical literature that brings to light how God's Spirit is working in the churches through the idioms, perceptions, and insights of specific ethno-cultural communities in this time of massive cultural change and globalization. Mary E. McGann, RSCJ, PhD, is assistant professor of liturgy and music at the Franciscan School of Theology at Berkeley. She is the author of Exploring Music as Worship and Theology and co-author with Edward Foley, Capuchin, of Music in the Eucharistic Prayer published by Liturgical Press.

This book presents three liturgical rights within an Afro-Baptist oral tradition of worship: the Wednesday night prayer meeting, the Deacon's devotion, and the Congregational worship. This examination provides one foundational study necessary to the creation of a liturgical theology of African American Christianity, through the study of sacred ritual within the lived experience of members of a community of traditional orallity and contemporary literacy, which together create a unique collective encounter of the Holy.
