A historical examination of African Christianity in Botswana, as now expressed in the African Independent Church. The study charts the development of this popular movement as a form of Christianity based on a mingling of African experiences of human existence, and teachings of the universal church. It describes how the African Independent Church developed alongside the Tswana Church and the Batswana people; as a rejection of the white missionaries' attack on Tswana culture and paternalism; and under the influence of the independent church movement in South Africa during apartheid. The author maintains, this resulted in a Church that is compatible with, acceptable and relevant to the indigenous culture; and which is simultaneously a genuinely African version of Christianity.

The identity and nature of the Holy Spirit has long been a critical – and often divisive – topic among Christians. Yet it is one with which we must continue to grapple if we are to grow in our understanding of the personhood of God, the calling of the church and the life of the believer. The seventh volume drawn from the annual conference of the Africa Society of Evangelical Theology, this collection of essays addresses questions of pneumatology against the rich background of African church history. African theologians explore centuries of Christian understanding, from the writings of Augustine to the doctrine of African Instituted Churches, and examine the impact of pneumatological belief upon the life and worship of the believer. Serving as a corrective on pneumatological heterodoxies while making space for both the diversity and unity of the African church, this volume provides a powerful reminder of the centrality of the Holy Spirit to Christian doctrine and praxis.

African Theology As Liberating Wisdom written by Mari-Anna Pöntinen and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-27 with Religion categories.

In African Theology as Liberating Wisdom; Celebrating Life and Harmony in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Botswana, Mari-Anna Pöntinen analyses contextual interpretations of the Christian faith in this particular church. These interpretations are based on the special wisdom tradition which embraces monistic ontology, communal ethics in botho, and the indigenous belief in God as the Source of Life, and the Root of everything that exists. The constructing theological principle in the ELCB is the downward-orientated and descending God in Christ which interprets the ‘Lutheran spirit’ in a liberating and empowering sense. It deals with the cultural mythos which brings Christ down into people’s existence, unlike Western connotations which are considered to hinder seeing Christ and to prevent existential self-awareness.

That the Bible is a manual for daily living is attested in almost all Christian denominations, how this role is transformed into practice is clearly an area that remains a contested terrain among Christians. This volume is our modest contribution to looking at the relationship between the Bible and our practices. The central question that the articles in this volume respond to is: how is the Bible related to our daily life? This question is especially important on the African continent where religion appears to be gaining influence. Without taking anything away from western biblical scholars, African biblical scholars must also engage with the question: how do we put into practice the teachings of the Bible? This volume contains papers presented at the International Bible Symposium 2009 in Bamberg (Germany) and additional contributions.

The essays in this volume illustrates the variety and power of predominantly pentecostal-charismatic movements between Western and African religious actors and groups that has developed across the past twenty years. In so doing, it also highlights the dramatic change in global "migration" patterns as a result of relatively inexpensive air travel.
