In The Road to Jamaica, which was announced over forty years ago, but suppressed, Cheney- Coker looks at a particular period of African history; the tragic, outward voyages of people and other social variants that have been part of what he calls his Afro-Saxon narrative. Crucially, the volume is divided into two sections: the first being a look at the shock of displacement, but also the remembrance of identifiable modes in the formation of a new cultural perspective. Looking back at remembered landscape, languages and cultural comforts, the poet has attempted to recreate as chapter of history that changed his and other people's idea of identity. The long poems that usher in Part 2 of the volume are, in a sense, reflections on that evolving template about our small world: the happenstances of regeneration, while at the same time an attempt to come to terms with the realities that societies, the world over, are bound to the inevitability of change. Given the smallness of that world, the oneness of our humanity, and the quiet personal awareness of aging, Cheney-Coker has, as usual, focused his lenses on them.

Outcries against the misogyny and sexism of prominent figures in the field have quickly turned to issues of racism, prompting Anglo-Saxonists to recognize an institutional, structural whiteness that not only bars the door to people of color but also prohibits scholars from confronting the very idea that race and racism operate within the field's scholarship, scholarly practices, and intellectual history. Anglo-Saxon(ist) Pasts, postSaxon Futures traces the integral role that colonialism and racism play in Anglo-Saxon studies by tracking the development of the "Anglo-Saxonist," an overtly racialized term that describes a person whose affinities point towards white nationalism. That scholars continue to call themselves "Anglo-Saxonists," despite urgent calls to combat racism within the field, suggests that this term is much more than just a professional appellative. In Black Chicago’s First Century, Christopher Robert Reed provides the first comprehensive study of an African American population in a nineteenth-century northern city beyond the eastern seaboard. Reed’s study covers the first one hundred years of African American settlement and achievements in the Windy City, encompassing a range of activities and events that span the antebellum, Civil War, Reconstruction, and post-Reconstruction periods. The author takes us from a time when black Chicago provided both workers and soldiers for the Union cause to the ensuing decades that saw the rise and development of a stratified class structure and growth in employment, politics, and culture.
