With the publication of Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition, widely considered a classic in Modern Greek studies and in collateral fields, Margaret Alexiou established herself as a major intellectual innovator on the interconnections among ancient, medieval, and modern Greek cultures. In her new, eagerly awaited book, Alexiou looks at how language defines the contours of myth and metaphor. Drawing on texts from the New Testament to the present day, Alexiou shows the diversity of the Greek language and its impact at crucial stages of its history on people who were not Greek. She then stipulates the relatedness of literary and "folk" genres, and assesses the importance of rituals and metaphors of the life cycle in shaping narrative forms and systems of imagery.Alexiou places special emphasis on Byzantine literary texts of the sixth and twelfth centuries, providing her own translations where necessary; modern poetry and prose of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; and narrative songs and tales in the folk tradition, which she analyzes alongside songs of the life cycle. Although Greek and Roman authors wrote ethnographic texts describing foreign cultures, ethnography seems to disappear from Byzantine literature after the seventh century C.E.—a perplexing exception for a culture so strongly self-identified with the Roman empire. Yet the Byzantines, geographically located at the heart of the upheavals that led from the ancient to the modern world, had abundant and sophisticated knowledge of the cultures with which they struggled and bargained. Ethnography After Antiquity examines both the instances and omissions of Byzantine ethnography, exploring the political and religious motivations for writing (or not writing) about other peoples. Through the ethnographies embedded in classical histories, military manuals, Constantine VII's De administrando imperio, and religious literature, Anthony Kaldellis shows Byzantine authors using accounts of foreign cultures as vehicles to critique their own state or to demonstrate Romano-Christian superiority over Islam. He comes to the startling conclusion that the Byzantines did not view cultural differences through a purely theological prism: their Roman identity, rather than their orthodoxy, was the vital distinction from cultures they considered heretic and barbarian. Filling in the previously unexplained gap between antiquity and the resurgence of ethnography in the late Byzantine period, Ethnography After Antiquity offers new perspective on how Byzantium positioned itself with and against the dramatically shifting world.

This book is an exploration of the layers of Rome: the accumulations of centuries of habitation that make the city a fascinating and sometimes confounding palimpsest. This architectural coexistence is perhaps most nakedly on display at the sites of the ancient theaters of Marcellus and Pompey. Here ancient, medieval, early modern and contemporary elements are interwoven in a way that produced some of the strangest buildings in Rome. Drawing on archival sources, pictorial records and physical evidence, this book untangles the rich history and fabric of these buildings. It starts to trace their evolution from the fall of the Roman empire, when the city's public monuments were taken over by private owners and the theaters were first used as simple shelters. It follows the theaters as they were taken over by powerful Roman families in the middle ages, and transformed into fortresses which dominated the urban landscape. And it examines the structures' continued evolution, as defensive needs were replaced by the desire for more elaborate living spaces, and eventually the requirements of the formal aristocratic palace. This last transformation posed the greatest challenge for the buildings and the families that inhabited them. The Tuscan palace was a highly desirable model but in many ways was incompatible with the massive, radial theater remains. The choices made by the owners in response to this problem are in many ways surprising, and shed light on overlooked aspects of patronage and palace-building. Eschewing badly needed formal improvements, the families focused primarily on enhencing the experiential aspects of their palaces. Their approach shared by some of their contemporaries, pointing to a plurality of practices in the conception of the palace. This book offers an alternative perspective on Rome's ancient remains: a material history which enriches our understanding of Rome and its antiquities, and illuminates aspects of baronial patronage, social identity, and even the palace itself.

Crises resulting from war or other upheavals turn the lives of individuals upside down, and they can leave marks on a community for many years after the event. This volume aims to explore how such crises were remembered in the ancient world, and how communities reconstituted themselves after a crisis. Can crises serve as catalysts for innovation or change, and how does this work? What do crises reveal about the 'normality' against which they are defined and framed? People living in post-crisis societies have no choice but to adapt to the changes caused by crisis. Such adaptation entails the question of how the relationship between the pre-crisis situation and the new status quo is constructed, and by whom. Due to the reduced possibility of using the immediate past, which is tainted by conflict and bad memories, it may involve revisions of historical narratives about communal pasts and identities, through the selection of new 'anchors', and sometimes even a discarding of the old ones. Crises affect all areas of life, and crisis recovery likewise spans different spheres. This volume finds traces of such recovery strategies in texts as well as visual representations; in literary as well as in documentary texts; in official ideology as much as in subaltern responses. The contributors bring together the diverse testimonies for such ways of coping that have survived from antiquity.
