This book aims to provide an overview of Italian foreign policy from the moment of unification to the establishment of the European Union. Three turning points are crucial in order to clarify Italy’s foreign policy: 1861, the proclamation of the Italian Kingdom; 1943, when Italy surrendered in World War II; 1992, the signing of the Maastricht Treaty. The international position of Italy continues to be an enigma for many observers and this fuels misinterpretations and prejudices. This book argues that Italy is different but not divergent from other European countries. Italian elites have traditionally seen foreign policy as an instrument to secure the state and import models for development. Italy can still contribute to international security and the strengthening of the EU. At the same time, Italy is not a pure adaptive country and has always maintained a critical attitude towards the international system in which it is incorporated.

Her mother is a bitter woman trying to make ends meet. One evening, in a drunken state, her father stumbles into Lydia's bedroom and believing her to be his wife, forces himself upon her. Lydia's mother tries to convince her it was all a mistake, but Lydia feeling ravaged and violated, runs away. In an effort to please his son, Louie Pellegrino agrees to buy a motor car. Rafe talks his parents and his friend Aldo into a motor trip to Naples. Along the way, they pick up a hitchhiker, disguised as a boy. Rafe suspects that the hiker is a girl and something about her makes a deep impression. When they arrive in Naples, the hiker jumps out. Rafe fails to see a pedestrian in the street until too late. He loses control of the car and crashes. Carlo, who was the cause of the accident, pulls the driver from the car and leaves him on the street. Terrified he'll be blamed for the crash, he asks for help from Don Salvatore Bartoli, a "man of respect". On board ship, Carlo befriends Lydia who has booked passage to America. In the new country Lydia comes to depend on Carlo and finally agrees to marry him. His abuse and demands turn the marriage into a nightmare. She is soon pregnant and gives birth to a daughter, Iris. Rafe spends months recovering from the accident. With both parents and Aldo dead, he has no desire to remain in Italy. Through the family attorney, however, he discovers Aldo is alive.
