Opera After the Zero Hour: The Problem of Tradition and the Possibility of Renewal in Postwar West Germany presents opera as a site for the renegotiation of tradition in a politically fraught era of rebuilding. Though the "Zero Hour" put a rhetorical caesura between National Socialism and postwar West Germany, the postwar era was characterized by significant cultural continuity with the past. With nearly all of the major opera houses destroyed and a complex relationship to the competing ethics of modernism and restoration, opera was a richly contested art form, and the genre's reputed conservatism was remarkably multi-faceted. Author Emily Richmond Pollock explores how composers developed different strategies to make new opera "new" while still deferring to historical conventions, all of which carried cultural resonances of their own. Diverse approaches to operatic tradition are exemplified through five case studies in works by Boris Blacher, Hans Werner Henze, Carl Orff, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, and Werner Egk. Each opera alludes to a distinct cultural or musical past, from Greek tragedy to Dada, bel canto to Berg. Pollock's discussions of these pieces draw on source studies, close readings, unpublished correspondence, institutional history, and critical commentary to illuminate the politicized artistic environment that influenced these operas' creation and reception. The result is new insight into how the particular opposition between a conservative genre and the idea of the "Zero Hour" motivated the development of opera's social, aesthetic, and political value after World War II.

Design disciplines are challenged by the condition of the zero point. “Zero-context,” “cities from scratch,” and “zero-carbon” developments all force designers to tackle fundamental questions regarding the strategic relevance and impact of a design intervention. As much as the zero point presents naïve innocence and embodies contradictory notions, it also creates a ground for doubt, self-critique, and rejuvenation for architecture and urbanism. As cities are built before they can even be imagined, what do these projects suggest for the design disciplines? Rather than reductive aestheticization or total rejection, what are possible critical ways to reflect on this condition? Beyond a possible focus on the ambitions of these projects, it is important to see them as symptomatic of a much broader condition within contemporary architecture and urbanism. Along with the challenges inherent in the zero point, perhaps more meaningful are the provocations of the “after the zero” condition, which clearly marks the need to seriously explore fundamental inquiries regarding form and context (physical, social, political). The project (ie the exhibition and the publication) "After Year Zero" takes as its starting point the realignment of global relationships after the Second World War Europe s hour zero. However, it does not recount the post-1945 confrontation of the ideological blocs of the Cold War, and rather focuses on the world-historical caesura of decolonization. This investigation does not revolve around the confrontation, or the separation of identities, between the global North and South, but around models and geographies of collaboration, and reflection on the processes by which the universal is generated. By highlighting particular historical developments, it takes into account the fundamental interconnection of European and African history along with their respective narratives. To design and build new narratives of these historic events, to re-discover unpredictable and forgotten connections and alliances magazines, journals and newspapers will serve as a main source but also as a topic for the divers essays, written by researchers, authors, artists, curators, critics, architects and scientists. Where no art history exists, critical journals and other related platforms are crucial to molding its discourse and involve all the intellectual processes that such an undertaking implies. This first sentence of the mission statement of "NKA - Journal of Contemporary African Art," which was co-founded in 1994 by Okwui Enwezor, the artistic director of Documenta 11 and head of the Haus der Kunst museum in Munich, crystallises the main concern of many magazines launched at various times and different places within the African continent or the African diaspora. The format of magazines is not so much understood as a business model but rather as a periodical and often temporary intervention against a hegemonic voice. These were often set up under precarious circumstances as a collaborative artistic form of organizing discourse, critique and self-expression, but also as a format which renders possible the necessary task of creating a new language to talk about art, life and politics. The publication "After Year Zero "is not only a collection of new text-essays which accompanies the correspondent exhibition (at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin in 2013 and at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, 2015) but contains also eight different visual-essays around different emphases which are designed like a collage of documents, quotes, images, short contextual texts serving as the apparent surface of the historic narrative. Another relevant part of the book span the works by more than twenty artists present in the exhibition. "
