He outwitted the Vindhya mountain when, in its pride, it tried to obstruct the natural path of the sun. He drank all the waters of the ocean to expose the wicked Kalkeyas, who hid there after challenging the Gods to battle. Agastya is the most well-known among the Saptarshi. His stories are found not just in the Vedas but are scattered through the Brahmanas and the Puranas as well. These stories are known not only in India but are also a part of S.E. Asian mythology.

Agastya in the Tamil Land by K. N. Sivaraja Pillai first published in 1930. No tradition is so widespread throughout the length and breadth of the Tamil country as that concerning sage Agastya and his numerous exploits. Of all the mythic, semi-historic and historic personages of the Aryan annals, who have figured in South Indian History, Agastya has occupied the foremost place and secured the largest homage of the cultured and the masses alike. He meets us from the very start of Aryan History, being a composer of certain hymns of the earliest of the Vēdas, the Rg Vēda. Still he seems to have been not included amongst the seven holy sages, the Prajāpatis, or the progenitors of the human race.

Agasthya was one of the greatest Maharshis and was born with Mahavishnu’s blessings. He was a great devotee of Lord Sankara and Lord Shanmukha. He installed a number of Shivalingas and was the first sage to visit the southern part of India. Lord Brahma asked Vasishta to return to the world to resume the good work. Thus, two Maharshis were born through Mithra and Varuna, Agasthya being the first and Vasishta following him. Agasthya knew the secrets of the Vedas at birth and was an expert in the use of weapons. Two demons, Ilvala and Vatapi, were the scourge of several Brahmins. Agasthya saw through Ilvala’s devilish plans and simply put an end to Vatapi by digesting him! Seeing his pithrus hanging head downwards from a big tree because he was not still a gruhastha, he agreed to get married so that they could reach heaven. Agasthya was able to swallow the water of an entire sea so that Kaleyas, the demons who hid at the bottom of the sea, could be got rid of. He could convince the Vindhyas to stop growing, something which no one could even believe, let alone achieve. It is because of Agasthya that Nahusha turned into a huge python, thus saving Sachi Devi from marrying him even while her husband was alive. Agasthya was so powerful that he alone was able to stop the tilt of the Himalayan Mountain Range. All the guests had assembled at the southern part of the range making it heavy on one side – this was when they came to witness Lord Siva’s marriage to Parvathi. Lord Siva himself asked Agasthya to go to the south and stop the tilt. In fact, as the sage was disappointed, the Lord bestowed on him the divine power to witness the celestial marriage from his position in the south. On the advice of Agasthya, Lord Rama chanted the hymn,’Adithya Hridaya’ in order to kill Ravana and then performed Aswamedha yaga for the welfare of the world. Agasthya’s curse was so powerful that he did not spare Kubera, the Lord of Wealth. Kubera had ignored when his friend, Mahiman, had spat on the sage’s head from the sky. Again, king Indradyumna was able to reach the lotus feet of Lord Narayana because of the sage’s curse. The sage was known to assume Devendra’s role for the sake of protecting people on earth. Agasthya’s contribution to Tamil is invaluable. He is worshipped in many temples in Tamil Nadu. Sri Lalitha Sahasranamam is a gift to us from the sage in addition to a number of scholars whom the sage gave to the world. Our other books here can be searched using #BharathaSamskruthiPrakashana

This incredible book began when a little girl found a wooden statue of an ancient sage in a small hill town in southern India. Thirty years later, her father received direct experience from Sage Agastya, whose statue it was. During the next three years, the sage gave him great knowledge in classical Tamil as he sat in meditation. The girl's father gave voice to the knowledge flowing through him in the Tamil language, a mastery of which he did not posses. The girl's mother wrote it all down. The dictation happened without any interruption, research, or prior knowledge of the topic of the day. Soon people arrived and posed different questions and responses were received for questions spoken and unspoken. This book is a translation and transliteration of the original 'Agasthiyar Vazhipaadu'. Translated into easy English as 'Agastya, The Path', the book is literally the path forward for humanity as shown by Sage Agastya. It ushers in an incredible era defining the transition of mankind from material to higher consciousness through the words of this ancient Vedic sage. It is an era where cosmic knowledge is available to all that open their hearts and mind in true devotion. Boldly crossing the realms of scientific limitations, this book is a harbinger of the immense possibilities of that latent power that awaits within each of us. Karma, black magic, creation, death, birth, liberation, guru-disciple relationship, cause of suffering, all these topics are dealt with in the inimitable literary style of this ancient sage. Ample use of play of words, comparisons, and an easy iteration on profound topics in lyrical form reflect his earlier works. While there are several theories and legends regarding the birth of the sage himself in Indian literature, the sage reveals his true origin in this book. In addition to this, those interested in deeper understanding of Hindu rituals like Agnihotram, Kalasa puja will find the inner meaning of these rituals through the sage's explanations. This extensive text written in the style of ancient sacred texts is a beautiful blend of verse and prose, and includes beautiful hymns composed by Agastya.

Excerpt from Agastya in the Tamil Land No tradition is so widespread throughout the length and breadth of the Tamil country as that concerning sage Agastya and his numerous exploits. Of all the mythic, semi-historic and historic personages of the Aiyan annals, who have figured in South Indian History, Agastya has occupied the foremost place and secured the largest homage of the cultured and the masses alike. He meets us from the very start of Aryan History, being a composer of certain hymns of the earliest of the Vedas, the Rg Veda. Still he seems to have been not included amongst the seven holy sages, the Prajāpatis, or the progenitors of the human race. These were Gotama, Bharadwaja, Viswamitra Jamadagni, Vasistha, Kasyapa and Atri. Even later Puranas, like the Vāyu and the Visnu, which have amplified the list of the primitive sages by including Bhrgu and Daksa, have only quietly passed Agastya over. This circumstance may lend some colour of support to the doubt whether Agastya is not after all the sage of a later day. However that be, posterity has made ample amends for this omission by raising him to a still higher position and assigning him a place among the Stars. The Star Canopus, which sheds its brilliance in the Southern heavens, is believed to be none other than the austere Sage Agastya, the semi-divine benefactor of the human race, who has been thus honoured by a grateful posterity.
