Agent-based modeling/simulation is an emerging field that uses bottom-up and experimental analysis in the social sciences. Selected research from that presented at the Third International Workshop on Agent-Based Approaches in Economic and Social Complex Systems 2004, held in May 2004 in Kyoto, Japan, is included in this book. The aim of the workshop was to employ the bottom-up approach to social and economic problems by modeling, simulation, and analysis using a software agent. This research area is an emerging interdisciplinary field among the social sciences and computer science, attracting broad attention because it introduces a simulation-based experimental approach to problems that are becoming increasingly complex in an era of globalization and innovation in information technology. The state-of-the-art research and findings presented in this book will be indispensable tools for anyone involved in this rapidly growing discipline.

Catastrophes And Unexpected Behavior Patterns In Complex Artificial Populations written by Stanislaw Raczynski and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-05 with Business & Economics categories.

A major objective of this monograph is to present an agent-based simulation of artificial populations. The focus is on possible unexpected or catastrophic events that may spontaneously appear in simulations. A short recall of the tenets of the theory of catastrophes is given. Several examples of artificial society simulations are provided as the main topic of the book. With agent-based modeling, possible catastrophes and unexpected events in artificial populations are simulated. The book presents a new modeling and simulation tool, applied to social system simulation. The models are coded in the object- and agent-oriented language Bluesss (Blues Simulation System), related to the C++ language. The program code consists of a series of generic declarations of processes. Each of them includes a number of events that are coded in C++. At the runtime, a population of objects is generated. All the objects (agents) start to execute their own events, and interact with one another. During the simulations it is possible to observe the macro-behavior of the population, where some unexpected or "catastrophic" events occur. The examples include a stock market crash, catastrophes in extended prey–predator systems, growing organisms and cancer, epidemics, social inequality and economic decay, mass-service systems, and more. Remarks on possible simultaneous events are also included.

Technology Innovation For Sustainable Development Of Healthcare And Disaster Management written by Pradeep Kumar Ray and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-10-28 with Nature categories.

This book provides holistic case studies of technology development, examples of its complexities and an in-depth analysis from the perspective of information infrastructure. Natural disasters such as cyclones, tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanoes have disrupted the lives of people all over the world, particularly in Asia. In order to manage disasters and mitigate the damage, many technologies—surveillance systems, for instance—have been developed. An example of natural disaster is the ongoing devastation caused by COVID-19, which highlights the multi-disciplinary nature of disaster management, including agriculture, healthcare, economics, environment, engineering and technology. The pandemic has also led to the development and uptake of technologies such as vaccine development, new biotechnological innovations, telemedicine, the Internet of things (IoT) and mobile health (mHealth) all over the world. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) programme suggests an integrated approach to their development. For example, healthcare needs to be addressed in holistic perspectives including education, environment, economy and regulations, among others. These goals create challenges in the development, validation and deployment of new technology, with this book presenting a discussion of innovations in sustainable development of healthcare in the multi-disciplinary context of SDGs.

Operational Research (OR) deals with the use of advanced analytical methods to support better decision-making. It is multidisciplinary with strong links to management science, decision science, computer science and many application areas such as engineering, manufacturing, commerce and healthcare. In the study of emergent behaviour in complex adaptive systems, Agent-based Modelling & Simulation (ABMS) is being used in many different domains such as healthcare, energy, evacuation, commerce, manufacturing and defense. This collection of articles presents a convenient introduction to ABMS with papers ranging from contemporary views to representative case studies. The OR Essentials series presents a unique cross-section of high quality research work fundamental to understanding contemporary issues and research across a range of Operational Research (OR) topics. It brings together some of the best research papers from the esteemed Operational Research Society and its associated journals, also published by Palgrave Macmillan.

An aging population, increasing obesity and more people with mobility impairments are bringing new challenges to the management of routine and emergency people movement in many countries. These population challenges, coupled with the innovative designs being suggested for both the built environment and other commonly used structures (e.g., transportation systems) and the increasingly complex incident scenarios of fire, terrorism, and large-scale community disasters, provide even greater challenges to population management and safety. Pedestrian and Evacuation Dynamics, an edited volume, is based on the Pedestrian and Evacuation Dynamics (PED) 5th International 2010 conference, March 8th-10th 2010, located at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD, USA. This volume addresses both pedestrian and evacuation dynamics and associated human behavior to provide answers for policy makers, designers, and emergency management to help solve real world problems in this rapidly developing field. Data collection, analysis, and model development of people movement and behavior during nonemergency and emergency situations will be covered as well.

This book is a comprehensive collection of extended contributions from the 3rd International Conference on Environmental Protection and Disaster Risks and the 12th Annual CMDR COE Conference on Crisis Management and Disaster Response held in the period June 4–6, 2024, in Sofia, Bulgaria, as a hybrid participation event. Environmental protection and disaster risk topics are challenging fields, that scientific world is trying to address. Earthquakes, floods, fires, droughts, blizzards, dust storms, natural releases of toxic gases and liquids, diseases, and other environmental variations affect hundreds of millions of people each year. Many disaster events are triggered by human activities. Dealing with these problems requires a multidisciplinary scientific approach. Actions in these directions are taken more and more in the recent years by political bodies, NGOs, and scientific groups trying to find sustainable solutions for the future generations. Every point of view matters when it comes to our global home—The Planet Earth. This book presents recent advances in the topics: disaster management, natural hazards, risk reduction, and building resilience; climate change challenges and security implications; resilience and business continuity management; high-performance computing, modeling and simulations, GIS for environmental monitoring and artificial intelligence. The book is focused on important large-scale applications like environmental and climate modeling, computational optimizations and algorithms for specific hazard situations analyses.

Agent-based modeling/simulation is an emergent approach to the analysis of social and economic systems. It provides a bottom-up experimental method to be applied to social sciences such as economics, management, sociology, and politics as well as some engineering fields dealing with social activities. This book includes selected papers presented at the Fifth International Workshop on Agent-Based Approaches in Economic and Social Complex Systems held in Tokyo in 2007. It contains two invited papers given as the plenary and invited talks in the workshop and 21 papers presented in the six regular sessions: Organization and Management; Fundamentals of Agent-Based and Evolutionary Approaches; Production, Services and Urban Systems; Agent-Based Approaches to Social Systems; and Market and Economics I and II. The research presented here shows the state of the art in this rapidly growing field.
