This second volume on Early Cycladic (and Cycladicising) sculptures found in the Aegean, examines finds from mainland Greece, along with the rarer items from the north and east Aegean, with the exception of those discovered in the Cyclades (covered in the preceding volume), and of those found in Crete. The significance of these finds is that these are the principal testimonies of the influence of the Early Bronze Age Cycladic cultures in the wider Aegean. This influence is shown both by the export of sculptures produced in the Cyclades (and made of Cycladic marble), and of their imitations, produced elsewhere in the Aegean, usually of local marble. They hold the key, therefore, to the cultural interactions developing at this time, the so-called ‘international spirit’ manifest particularly during the Aegean Early Bronze II period. This was the time when the foundations of early Aegean civilization were being laid, and the material documented is thus of considerable significance. The volume is divided into sections wherein contributions examine finds and their archaeological, social, and economic contexts from specific regions. It concludes with an overview of the significance and role of these objects in Early Bronze Age societies of the Aegean and eastern Mediterranean region. This will be the first time that this material has been systematically gathered together. Highly illustrated, it follows and builds on the successful preceding volume, Early Cycladic Sculpture in Context (Oxbow 2016).

Over eleven years have passed since the last NATO sponsored meeting on Fishing which took the form of a Conference held in Trondheim in 1979. The proceedings contained in this book consist of papers presented in support of an Advanced Study Institute on Operations Research and Management in Fishing held at P6voa de Varzim, Portugal from March 25 to April 7 1990. It was originally intended to use the five themes, Production Functions and Management; Marine Fish Stocks; Fisheries Models; Fish Farming and Miscellaneous. There were no contributions on Fish Processing and the Fish Farming papers were not original. It was also decided to group the papers on Fisheries Models and Marine Fish Stocks together which means the proceedings has four headings: - Opening Session - Production Functions and Management - Marine Fish Stocks and Fisheries Models - Miscellaneous The contributions give a broad and complete overview of historical approaches and of recent trends on research in different sectors of fisheries. Criteria for quota distribution and schemes based on conclusions drawn from models and methods are presented. Surveillance methods are described in relation to species conservation and catch improvement. Different levels of regulatory enforcement are discussed and the implications of new technologies are introduced. Applications of Expert Systems to stock assessment and efficiency improvement in field sampling are presented. Models for fleet dispatch planning and fleet structure appraisal are introduced and procedures for operational capacity evaluation of fishery harbours are considered.

Malanotte-Rizzoli and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

This book is the outcome of a NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "The Eastern Mediterranean as a laboratory basin for the assessment of contrasting ecosystems" that was held in Kiev, Ukraine, March 23-27, 1998. The scientific rationale of the workshop can be summarized as follows. The Eastern Mediterranean is the most nutrient impoverished and oligotrophic large water body known. There is a well-defined eastward trend in nutrient ratios over the entire Mediterranean that starts at the Gibraltar Straits and, through the western basin, proceeds to the Ionian and Levantine Seas. Supply of nutrients to the entire Mediterranean is limited by inputs from the North Atlantic and various river systems along the sea. The unique feature of the Mediterranean is the presence of an eastward longitudinal trend in available nitrate/phosphate ratios. This apparently induces a west-to-east variation in the structure of the pelagic food web and trophic interactions. In this context the Mediterranean, and in particular its Eastern basin, provides probably a unique platform to explore the hypotheses related to the suggested phosphate-limitation on production and to the shift between "microbial" and "classical" modes of operation of the photic food web. The major exception of the overall oligotrophic nature of the Eastern Mediterranean is the highly eutrophic system of the Northern Adriatic Sea. Here, during the last two decades the discharges of the northern rivers (especially of the Po), together with municipal sewage, have led to a very marked increase of nutrients and subsequent imponent eutrophication events.

It is always interesting to read studies of insular or isolated groups or environments, and to speculate on why they do not tend to mirror changes in neighbouring areas. This book studies the archaeological evidence during the period 3000-800 BC, the settlements, cemeteries, artefacts and environment of each individual island. In a concluding chapter the islands are studied as a group looking at general sequences of historical and cultural development and the role of foreign, outside influences in accounting or contributing to these changes. A clear and well illustrated archaeological study.

A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Situated at the disciplinary boundary between prehistory and history, this book presents a new synthesis of Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Greece, from the rise and fall of Mycenaean civilization, through the "Dark Age," and up to the emergence of city-states in the Archaic period. This period saw the growth and decline of varied political systems and the development of networks that would eventually expand to nearly all shores of the Middle Sea. Alex R. Knodell argues that in order to understand how ancient Greece changed over time, one must analyze how Greek societies constituted and reconstituted themselves across multiple scales, from the local to the regional to the Mediterranean. Knodell employs innovative network and spatial analyses to understand the regional diversity and connectivity that drove the growth of early Greek polities. As a groundbreaking study of landscape, interaction, and sociopolitical change, Societies in Transition in Early Greece systematically bridges the divide between the Mycenaean period and the Archaic Greek world to shed new light on an often-overlooked period of world history.
