Issues that are salient in understanding the role of retirement in the delayed expression of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in older veterans are examined in this review. Although high rates of delayed onset PTSD have been observed in military samples, there has been minimal research exploring the prevalence of this phenomenon or the mechanisms underlying symptom reactivation among veterans in late life. Findings from case reports, retrospective studies, and cross-sectional studies provide evidence that retirement can precipitate the onset of PTSD in older veterans.

Research on youth aging out of foster care is limited and rarely focuses on their outcomes in life. Not only are these youths starting out at a disadvantage without a stable home life or clear sources of support compared to other youth their age, they are also less likely to be employed and more likely to suffer from emotional disorders, only worsening their living conditions and potentially their outcomes in life. The present study explored the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and employment status of these youths and also explored a potential mediation role for social support on this relationship. The sample studied were 50 young adults who have aged out of foster care or have been homeless prior to reaching adulthood. Those young adults who had more PTSD symptoms were expected to have low rates of employment. Social support was expected to buffer this link between PTSD and employment status. These hypotheses were tested using self-reported PTSD symptomology (PCL-5), perceived social support (MSPSS), and employment status at the time of the interview. Although the hypotheses were not supported, individual facets of social support were found to negatively correlate with PTSD symptoms. The results of this study may be useful for developing interventions for these youth.

A plethora of information exists regarding Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam veterans. What has not been exclusively researched is the effect of this illness on the aging wives and female companions of these veterans. The purpose of this phenomenologic qualitative replication study was to describe the experiences of wives and female companions living with aging Vietnam veterans with chronic PTSD and to compare/contrast findings to the 2001 parent study conducted by Lyons. A purposive sample of wives/female companions living with aging Vietnam veterans with chronic PTSD was recruited from various geographical areas of the United States using snowball sampling, recruitment flyers and direct contact. The 10 participants ranged in age from mid-fifties to the late sixties and had been in a cohabitating relationship with aging Vietnam veterans diagnosed with PTSD for more than six months over the last fifteen years. The data collection approach for this phenomenological study used semi-structured interview questions, with four participants interviewed in person and the remaining six participants interviewed by telephone; all interviews were audio recorded. Participants were also asked to complete a demographic questionnaire and the Cohen perceived stress scale, which measured the level of perceived stress within the past month. Data was analyzed using Colaizzi's systematic method and the qualitative analytical program Nvivo 10 was used to code data and extract themes. Themes that emerged were similar to the findings of Lyons and a fourth phase was added that was termed the epilogue.
