While the theory of demand—that consumers buy more as prices fall and buy less as they rise—is decidedly uncontroversial in mainstream economics, the absence of controversy belies the theory’s contentious and complicated history. This volume provides a better understanding of the history of demand theory and its relationship to major theoretical developments in twentieth-century microeconomics. This paper studies a manufacturer's contracting strategy in a two-period dyadic supply chain, wherein the manufacturer has private demand information and can use contract choice and wholesale price(s) to signal it to the uninformed retailer. We examine how pricing commitment and contract timing influence supply chain members' strategies and profitability. We build a game-theoretical model, in which the manufacturer with private demand information can choose to offer either a dynamic contract by announcing the wholesale price in each period sequentially or a commitment contract by announcing the prices of two periods simultaneously. We consider two scenarios regarding whether the contract scheme is determined before or after the manufacturer observes demand information. First, we show the distinct effects of different contract schemes: A dynamic contract endows the manufacturer with pricing flexibility and induces the retailer to carry strategic inventory, while a commitment contract will eliminate strategic inventory and is more effective for the manufacturer with high demand information to separate itself. As a result, separating equilibrium arises more frequently under a commitment contract than under a dynamic contract, and either contract scheme could be preferred by the manufacturer with asymmetric information. Second, we also show the non-trivial impacts of contract-selection timing: (1) The separating equilibrium arises more frequently when the manufacturer chooses the contract scheme after observing demand information, and (2) delaying the contract choice could improve the manufacturer's (ex-ante) expected profit only if the probability of high demand and inventory holding cost are low enough and hurt its expected profit otherwise. Our results shed light on the selection of contract choice, a fundamental contractual agreement in the supply chain. We uncover the values of pricing commitment and contract-selection timing from the perspective of information signaling, which can provide useful guidance on when and how a manufacturer should choose the right contract to promote its new product to the unknown retailer.
