Il libro ripercorre le tappe dell’Asse Roma-Berlino nell’ambito dell’agricoltura e dell’edilizia, avendo come base di partenza le memorie di un lavoratore della bonifica pontina. Le memorie di un immigrato di origini friulane, lavoratore nell’ambito della bonifica pontina, fortunosamente pervenuteci, ci hanno fornito l’imperdibile occasione di calarci dal vivo nel passato e precisamente al momento della nascita di Pomezia, stavolta non attraverso le pagine dei giornali dell’epoca o dei libri di storia, oppure attraverso i fogli dei documenti ufficiali, ma direttamente con le suggestioni scaturite da pagine scarne ma sincere, essenziali e rare, come tutto quello che riporta la voce di chi allora non poteva testimoniare direttamente approvazioni o dissensi, impegnato com’era a risolvere il duro problema del vivere quotidiano ed era, oltre tutto, occhiutamente controllato da un regime totalitario che ne incanalava i moti e le reazioni. Le memorie di Romano Urbani ci parlano degli anni in cui non soltanto l’impeto della bonifica integrale in Agro Pontino ma anche l’esigenza di costruire in breve tempo nuove città di fondazione, fecero convergere in quell’area del Lazio numerose maestranze disponibili a lavorare sia nel campo agricolo che nell’edilizia.

Una serie di interviste a discendenti delle famiglie coloniche di Pomezia: testimonianze inedite su episodi illuminanti di storia novecentesca. I testi riportati presentano un interessante intreccio di storia ufficiale e vita personale, si è cercato,quando è stato possibile, di non correggere errori nelle date, omissioni frutto di chiare rimozioni, reiterazioni quasi maniacali di ricordi che sono divenuti memoria condivisa (”Trovammo persino i fiammiferi in cucina!”), consolidatisi in altri luoghi e situazioni, spesso istituzionali. Le interviste con i discendenti dei coloni hanno a volte (sono esclusi, infatti, particolari casi), andamenti poco compatti, spesso la successione cronologica dei racconti non è rispettata, sovente l'urgenza di narrare un dato fatto interrompe e travolge la restituzione lineare dei ricordi. È agevole osservare che quasi in tutte le interviste appaiono episodi dilatati rispetto alle proporzioni temporali, che assumono natura esemplare, riassumendo addirittura il senso di una vita: essi sono sovente una fuga, un'offerta, una sorpresa, un furto, una perdita, una svolta inaspettata, un abbandono, un ritorno. Dunque alcuni fatti hanno avuto per i testimoni una particolare importanza ed anche se si citano eventi non del tutto obiettivamente, ciò indica la violenza di un impatto: neè un palese esempio il ricordo della cerimonia di inaugurazione di Pomezia dell'autunno del '39,alla quale in duce dedicò poco più di due ore(comprensive pure di visite ad Ardea ed ai poderi degli Sforza-Cesarini), ebbene, nei ricordi dei contadini di allora quella cerimonia appare magnifica,sontuosa, assai rappresentativa e Mussolini viene riconosciuto come uno di loro, paradossalmente proprio all'apice del suo isolamento”cesareo” di quegli anni che lo porterà alla tragica scelta della guerra.
