In Poland, present policies are aimed at promoting large, mechanized farms over smaller family farms. These policies are based on the perception that large farms offer real economies of scale. But international evidence indicates that such large, mechanized farms are generally less efficient and use less labor than small family farms. The authors analyzed the relationship between farm size and efficiency in Polish agriculture. They used two different methods to do so. First they determined differences in total factor productivity between small and large farms. They then used Data Envelope Analysis to estimate scale efficiencies. The results show that, for the sample of farms analyzed: 1) large farms are not more efficient than smaller farms; and 2) smaller farms are more labor-intensive than larger farms. These results have important policy implications for farm restructuring in Poland and other transition economies facing similar issues and conditions.

Poland embarked on the road toward a market economy with its economic reform program of January 1990, aimed at stabilizing the macroeconomy. The productive sectors, including agriculture and related industries, will be able to build on the solid foundations of this program. But the productive sectors are difficult and time consuming to reform, and it is not always easy to identify the actions that will bring about the desired changes and differentiate them from those that slow down the reform process. Both categories often look dangerously alike. A strategic plan is needed to help orient decision-makers in the maze of complex relations and detailed actions that are constantly required. The agricultural sector, because of its social and economic importance, has the potential to be either a brake or an engine for the reform program. The present farm crisis is only a reminder of this fact. This report is an attempt to define such a strategy for agriculture.

This article, devoted to the issue of non-agricultural economic activity in rural areas, reports upon the latest statistical data, as well as material obtained by way of field study. Successive sections acquaint the reader with the contemporary functional structure of rural areas, the areas in which non-agricultural businesses are concentrated, the development of new functions in the countryside and factors favoring this development. The summary notes that Poland's period of transformation brought a dynamic development of activity of the above kind, albeit one that has not yet been able to make up for the earlier closedown of state-owned or cooperative enterprises. The greatest development of non-agricultural economic activity has been observed in city hinterland areas and has first and foremost involved the service sector and trade. In turn, the peripheral areas left more or less to their own devices have experienced slower development of business outside agriculture, in association with such unfavorable phenomena manifested therein as depopulation, unemployment, lack of investment, etc. These all contribute to deepening of the poverty existing in the aforementioned areas.

The Economic Results Of Organic Agricultural Production Activities And The Prospects For The Development Of Organic Farming In Poland written by Marcin Żekało and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with categories.

Despite the continuous increase in the number of organic farms and in the areas in which organic methods are used, organic farming remains a niche sector, not only in Poland but also in other European countries. Nevertheless, a form of organic farming can still be attractive for part of farmers, particularly in view of the continuing financial support for this sector. This paper presents the state of organic farming in Poland and the production and economic conditions of agricultural production using the example of major agricultural production activities in organic farms. The results based on Agricultural Products Data Collection System AGROKOSZTY shows that the organic agricultural production is profitable and economically justified. In comparison with conventional production the low level of direct costs in organic production leads very often to higher level of gross margin from particular agricultural activities. The combination of low level of total costs and financial support for organic production gives organic farmers the higher level of income from each studied activity. The production capacity is limited but the production results seems to be not that important in organic farming than the balance between economic results, social conditions and environmental requirements.
