Excerpt from Ahead of the Army Lest any one should suspect exaggeration in the pictures of Mexican affairs in the old time, which are presented by Senor Car fora, it may be well to offer a few facts by way of explanation. During sixty-three years of the national life of the Republic of Mexico, from the'establishment of its independence in 1821 to the year 1884, nearly all of its successive changes of gov ernment were accompanied by more or less violence and bloodshed. There have been fifty-five Mexican Presidents; at one rev olutionary period, four within three months, and to this list must be added two emperors and one regency. Both of the emperors were shot, so were several of the Presidents, and nearly all of the others incurred the penalty of banishment. How this came to be so will possibly be better understood by the young Americans who will kindly travel with Senor Carfora and his generals and his two armies, commanded for him by General Scott and General Santa Anna. Ahead Of The Army This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. War was new to them, and they were not aware how many of them were now entering a preparatory school in which they were to be trained for service in a war of vastly greater proportions and for the command of its contending armies, on either side.Up sprang the young lieutenant and stepped to the door of his tent. Excerpt from The Army Sketch Book: An Artist's Story of the War We descended the hill to the river, and crossing on the pontoons, were soon on our way towards the front. We passed through the wagon-camps on a at near the river, and ascending a gentle slope were soon in the dense woods beyond. Darkness had now fallen, and the din of the con ict increased, though we concluded that the enemy's advance had been checked, as the reports of firing came no nearer. Sounds rose and fell as the opposing forces changed position, coming clearly and distinctly from a wooded ridge but with muf ed tone from the valleys. Suddenly there came a burst of artillery, and a tremendous roar continued for one hour. Then word was received that the enemy's advance had been checked. Suddenly we met straggling parties of demoralized troops hurrying towards the rear, and found on inquiry that the Eleventh Corps, holding the right ank Of our army, had been surprised and put to rout by Stonewall Jackson, who had been making one of his famous forced marches for the purpose. These men were panic-stricken, rushing about at random with no directness of movement, their only thought being to get away from the bullets. Guards were thrown out on both sides of the road to put an end to the disgraceful confusion, and when the way was cleared we pushed forward toward the firing. I shall never forget the scene at this point, at nine O'clock. Fires were blazing on every side, which, with the pine trees that had been ignited, so lit up the road that objects were as discernible as in the day; and surging through it all was a mass of earnest, determined men who were intent only on reaching the line of battle where they could be of service to their struggling comrades. Marching hurriedly forward, they soon came to a road leading from Ely's Ford to Chancellorsville, and deploying to right and left the lines were very shortly in such a position that the damage done by Jackson's masterly surprise was almost made good, although a last desperate attempt was made at eleven o'clock to take pos session of a plateau surrounding the Chancellorsville House.
