We are pleased to present this LNCS volume, the Proceedings of the 22nd A- tralasianJointConferenceonArti?cialIntelligence(AI2009),heldinMelbourne, Australia, December 1–4,2009.This long established annual regionalconference is a forum both for the presentation of researchadvances in arti?cial intelligence and for scienti?c interchange amongst researchers and practitioners in the ?eld of arti?cial intelligence. Conference attendees were also able to enjoy AI 2009 being co-located with the Australasian Data Mining Conference (AusDM 2009) and the 4th Australian Conference on Arti?cial Life (ACAL 2009). This year AI 2009 received 174 submissions, from authors of 30 di?erent countries. After an extensive peer review process where each submitted paper was rigorously reviewed by at least 2 (and in most cases 3) independent revi- ers, the best 68 papers were selected by the senior Program Committee for oral presentation at the conference and included in this volume, resulting in an - ceptance rate of 39%. The papers included in this volume cover a wide range of topics in arti?cial intelligence: from machine learning to natural language s- tems, from knowledge representation to soft computing, from theoretical issues to real-world applications. AI 2009 also included 11 tutorials, available through the First Australian Computational Intelligence Summer School (ACISS 2009). These tutorials – some introductory, some advanced – covered a wide range of research topics within arti?cial intelligence, including data mining, games, evolutionary c- putation, swarm optimization, intelligent agents, Bayesian and belief networks.

The set of methods comprises covariance matrix estimation, meta-modeling of fitness and constraint functions, dimensionality reduction for search and visualization of high-dimensional optimization processes, and clustering-based niching. After giving an introduction to evolution strategies and machine learning, the book builds the bridge between both worlds with an algorithmic and experimental perspective. Experiments mostly employ a (1+1)-ES and are implemented in Python using the machine learning library scikit-learn. The 32nd Annual German Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence, KI 2009 (KI being the German acronym for AI), was held at the University of Paderborn, Germany on September 15–18, 2009, continuing a series of successful events. Starting back in 1975 as a national meeting, the conference now gathers - searchers and developers from academic ?elds and industries worldwide to share their research results covering all aspects of arti?cial intelligence. This year we received submissions from 23 countries and 4 continents. Besides the inter- tional orientation, we made a major e?ort to include as many branches of AI as possible under the roof of the KI conference. A total of 21 area chairs represe- ing di?erent communities within the ?eld of AI selected further members of the program committee and helped the local organizers to acquire papers. The new approach appealed to the AI community: we had 126 submissions, which cons- tuted an increase of more than 50%, and which resulted in 14 parallel sessions on the following topics agents and intelligent virtual environments AI and engineering automated reasoning cognition evolutionary computation Robotics experience and knowledge management history and philosophical foundations knowledge representation and reasoning machine learning and mining natural language processing planning and scheduling spatial and temporal reasoning vision and perception o?ering cutting edge presentations and discussions with leading experts. Thirty-one percent of the contributions came from outside German-speaking countries.

Kirchhoff’s laws give a mathematical description of electromechanics. The reader will learn how to bestow self-awareness and express optimal learning methods for the self-aware object (e.g. robot) that require no tuning and no interaction with humans for autonomous operation. The topics learned from reading this text will prepare students and faculty to investigate interesting problems of mechanics.
