Healthcare is one of the major success stories of our times. Medical science has improved rapidly, raising life expectancy around the world, but as longevity increases, healthcare systems face growing demand for their services, rising costs and a workforce that is struggling to meet the needs of its patients. Demand is driven by a combination of unstoppable forces: population aging, changing patient expectations, a shift in lifestyle choices, and the never-ending cycle of innovation being but a few. Of these, the implications from an aging population stand out. By 2050, one in four people in Europe and North America will be over the age of 65—this means the health systems will have to deal with more patients with complex needs. Managing such patients is expensive and requires systems to shift from an episodic care-based philosophy to one that is much more proactive and focused on long-term care management. Healthcare spending is simply not keeping up. Without major structural and transformational change, healthcare systems will struggle to remain sustainable. Health systems also need a larger workforce, but although the global economy could create 40 million new health-sector jobs by 2030, there is still a projected shortfall of 9.9 million physicians, nurses and midwives globally over the same period, according to the World Health Organization. We need not only to attract, train and retain more healthcare professionals, but we also need to ensure their time is used where it adds most value— caring for patients. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform how healthcare is delivered. A joint report with the European Union’s EIT Health explores how it can support improvements in care outcomes, patient experience and access to healthcare services. It can increase productivity and the efficiency of care delivery and allow healthcare systems to provide more and better care to more people. AI can help improve the experience of healthcare practitioners, enabling them to spend more time in direct patient care and reducing burnout. Healthcare is one of the major success stories of our times

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in conjunction with cloud computing in contemporary healthcare is bringing about a revolution in patient care, medical research, and the efficiency of operational procedures. Patient records, medical imaging, genetic information, and real-time monitoring data from wearables are all examples of the massive volumes of data that are produced by the healthcare industry. The use of this data poses not only a difficulty but also an opportunity to improve diagnoses, treatment, and personalised care. Artificial intelligence algorithms are able to handle and analyse enormous information by utilising the scalable architecture of the cloud. This allows them to discover patterns and insights that would otherwise be impossible to identify. As a result of this synergy, predictive analytics for disease outbreaks, early identification of illnesses such as cancer, personalised treatment plans based on genetic profiles, and optimised healthcare logistics are all made possible. Furthermore, cloud systems that are powered by artificial intelligence enhance data accessibility and interoperability, which enables smooth cooperation across healthcare providers while simultaneously assuring data security and compliance with laws. However, ethical considerations and data privacy continue to be important challenges, since it is necessary to protect patient information in order to preserve trust and adhere to regulatory norms. The purpose of this book is to investigate how artificial intelligence (AI)-powered cloud solutions are enabling the potential of big data in the healthcare industry, therefore enhancing efficiency, enhancing patient outcomes, and paving the road for the future of precision medicine. Additionally, it investigates the technological, ethical, and regulatory problems that are linked with this paradigm change, providing insights into the methods of integration that are both sustainable and responsible. A change towards data-driven decision-making is being sparked by the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies in the healthcare industry. This shift is expected to reduce reliance on conventional diagnostic approaches and enhance accuracy through the utilisation of automated systems. Using AI models that have been trained on big datasets, for example, it is now possible to detect early signs of illnesses in medical imaging with a level of precision that is equivalent to, and sometimes even exceeds, that of human specialist. In regions with limited access to specialised medical skills, this breakthrough is especially helpful since it is particularly advantageous in locations with low resource

PREFACE In an era dominated by technological advancements, the ability to extract meaningful insights from the ever-expanding volume of data has become a competitive advantage for organizations worldwide. Big Data, with its vast scope, provides companies with unprecedented opportunities to understand consumer behavior, optimize operations, and forecast future trends. Yet, despite its potential, raw data alone is insufficient; it needs to be processed, analyzed, and interpreted in a way that yields actionable insights. This is where Predictive Analytics comes into play. Predictive analytics is the practice of using historical data, machine learning algorithms, and statistical models to forecast future outcomes and trends. By leveraging Big Data, predictive analytics allows organizations to anticipate future behaviors, market shifts, and operational needs with remarkable accuracy. This predictive power is transforming industries, from retail and healthcare to finance and manufacturing, by providing businesses with tools to make data-driven decisions rather than relying solely on intuition or past experience. The goal of this book is to explore the intersection of Big Data and Predictive Analytics, providing readers with both theoretical insights and practical approaches to harnessing predictive models in Big Data environments. Throughout the chapters, we will cover the various types of predictive models, including regression analysis, time-series forecasting, decision trees, and neural networks, highlighting how these models can be applied to Big Data to solve real-world challenges. These methodologies are essential for applications ranging from demand forecasting and fraud detection to personalized marketing and healthcare diagnostics. Data preparation plays a pivotal role in predictive analytics, and this book will delve into the critical process of cleaning, transforming, and normalizing Big Data to ensure accurate and reliable predictions. Additionally, we will explore the implementation of machine learning algorithms, such as supervised and unsupervised learning, which form the backbone of many predictive models used in modern business applications. One of the core themes of this book is to demonstrate how predictive analytics is not just a tool for data scientists but a crucial component of decision support systems, helping organizations make informed choices across various departments, including marketing, operations, and finance. The book will also address the challenges that come with predictive analytics, such as data quality, overfitting, and model interpretability, providing solutions to these common obstacles. Through detailed case studies, particularly in the financial, retail, and healthcare sectors, this book highlights the transformative impact of predictive analytics in Big Data. By the end of this book, readers will not only gain an understanding of the core principles of predictive analytics but will also be equipped with the knowledge to apply these techniques in their own organizations to drive meaningful business outcomes. We hope this book serves as both an academic resource and a practical guide, empowering professionals, researchers, and students to fully leverage predictive analytics in the context of Big Data. This open access book explores ways to leverage information technology and machine learning to combat disease and promote health, especially in resource-constrained settings. It focuses on digital disease surveillance through the application of machine learning to non-traditional data sources. Developing countries are uniquely prone to large-scale emerging infectious disease outbreaks due to disruption of ecosystems, civil unrest, and poor healthcare infrastructure – and without comprehensive surveillance, delays in outbreak identification, resource deployment, and case management can be catastrophic. In combination with context-informed analytics, students will learn how non-traditional digital disease data sources – including news media, social media, Google Trends, and Google Street View – can fill critical knowledge gaps and help inform on-the-ground decision-making when formal surveillance systems are insufficient.
