Excerpt from Aicha the Mauresque: An Algerian Fantasy The Pilgrim's Rest is a cafe which lies midway between the Ouled Nail country of the south and the port of El Hadj in the north, and from this port, even to-day, the true believers embark for the Mecca. It was in the Pilgrim's Rest that we first spoke, and the time of our speaking was a short period prior to his departure on pilgrimage to the eternal Mecca. I saw him first in the Moorish baths which are built over the hot sulphur springs of the town. At certain times of the day these baths are reserved for women, and the Mauresques, as they call the Arab women, go there with pots of lime cream - with which they remove unsightly hair from their bodies - and of kuhl, and of henna in fine powder, and of perfumes purchased in the Arab market. In the arched rooms they cleanse their bodies according to ritual and apply the primitive cosmetics. They also grasp the opportunity to gossip. Finally, robed in white and modestly veiled, they patter into the sunlight, and they return to their homes so that their husbands may be refreshed by their beauty. At other times of the day the baths are reserved for men. They enter when the heat of the sirocco is ended, and become cleansed of dust and sweat. They also emerge in robes of white. It was while I lay there on the heated stones, my body glistening with droplets of condensed steam and with moisture from the pores of my skin, that he entered and stood for a moment between the arches which gave support to the roof. In this stunning novel, Assia Djebar intertwines the history of her native Algeria with episodes from the life of a young girl in a story stretching from the French conquest in 1830 to the War of Liberation of the 1950s. The girl, growing up in the old Roman coastal town of Cherchel, sees her life in contrast to that of a neighboring French family, and yearns for more than law and tradition allow her to experience. Headstrong and passionate, she escapes from the cloistered life of her family to join her brother in the maquis' fight against French domination. Djebar's exceptional descriptive powers bring to life the experiences of girls and women caught up in the dual struggle for independence - both their own and Algeria's.

Sex Law And Sovereignty In French Algeria 1830 1930 written by Judith Surkis and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-15 with History categories.

During more than a century of colonial rule over Algeria, the French state shaped and reshaped the meaning and practice of Muslim law by regulating it and circumscribing it to the domain of family law, while applying the French Civil Code to appropriate the property of Algerians. In Sex, Law, and Sovereignty in French Algeria, 1830–1930, Judith Surkis traces how colonial authorities constructed Muslim legal difference and used it to deny Algerian Muslims full citizenship. In disconnecting Muslim law from property rights, French officials increasingly attached it to the bodies, beliefs, and personhood. Surkis argues that powerful affective attachments to the intimate life of the family and fantasies about Algerian women and the sexual prerogatives of Muslim men, supposedly codified in the practices of polygamy and child marriage, shaped French theories and regulatory practices of Muslim law in fundamental and lasting ways. Women's legal status in particular came to represent the dense relationship between sex and sovereignty in the colony. This book also highlights the ways in which Algerians interacted with and responded to colonial law. Ultimately, this sweeping legal genealogy of French Algeria elucidates how "the Muslim question" in France became—and remains—a question of sex.
