One of the most important aspects of AIDS is the loss of protective immune function in the infected host which leads to increased prevalence of opportunistic infections and cancers. This book specifically addresses viral-induced human cancers associated with AIDS and observed in the AIDS population. It addresses the specific treatment required in this special population and the molecular biology of the causative viral agents.

Cancer incidences increase in people living with HIV/AIDS. Over 2 million people currently live with HIV/AIDS in the US. This number will increase as HAART prolongs the average lifespan and as (at least in some states) the number of new HIV infections increase again. As this population ages their incidence rates for cancer will increase, as well. Recently, new rational targets for cancer therapy have emerged. But their application to the care of HIV+ patients is slow, because of concerns about the weakened immune status of the patients, because of possible drug interactions with HAART and because some of the AIDS defining cancer are rare.

The precise relationship between viral infection and malignancy remains an epidemiologic association and the subject of active investigation. Nonmalignant hematologic disorders have a similarly complex relationship with cancer-associated viruses and may offer insight into the pathogenesis of oncogenesis. This book explores the relationships between viral infections, immune impairments and the hematologic and malignant diseases, particularly against the backdrop of the HIV epidemic. By extending the scope to all of viral oncology the editors provide an invaluable resource on tumors related to other viruses other than HIV, particularly carcinomas of the cervix and anus with HPV and tumors of the liver with the various hepatitis viruses.

Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is known to be associated with an increased risk of neoplastic disorders, especially Kaposi's sarcoma and aggressive B-cell lymphoma for the former, and T-cell lymphoma for the latter. The information obtained from the study of these infections has led to remarkable advances in our understanding of the immune system, as well as the biology of human neoplasms. The management of malignant diseases in such patients also poses substantial challenges to clinicians. This book provides an overview of the epidemiology, biology, clinical features, and clinical management of neoplasms occurring in such individuals. It is an important resource for clinicians treating these diseases, and for basic scientists who have an interest in this field.

This is the proceedings of the International Conference on AIDS Associated Syndromes held at Irvine on December 7-8, 1984. The purpose of this conference was to bring together investigators who are actively engaged in AIDS research to present their most recent data with regard to etiological agent(s) of AIDS, immunological characteristics of some of the patients in early stages of AIDS and various therapeutical modalities that are available for the treatment of AIDS, early AIDS (persistent generalized lymphadnopathy) or for those who demonstrate asymptomatic acquired immunodeficiency. In the area of etiological agents, the discussions are presented dealing with the questions of whether HTLV III/LAV alone or with other co-factor(s) like EBV or CMV are responsible for AIDS. What is the relationship of these viruses to Kaposi's sarcoma, since Kaposi's sarcoma in AIDS cannot be simply explained on the basis of the underlying immune deficiency? Data are presented for HTLV III/LAV interactions with the T4 molecule on the surface of helper T cells. A paper is presented with epidemiologicai evidence for AIDS being an African disease which perhaps was brought to the United States and then to Haiti.

Cancer And Aids written by Christopher Kwesi O. Williams and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-30 with Medical categories.

The lifestyles and socio-economic status that are prevalent in regions of the world with limited resources form the background for the unique features of neoplastic diseases in these areas, where the majority of the world population lives. The predominance of the world’s retroviral burden of in these areas further compounds the nature and challenges of the cancer there. Much of the international cancer literature covers the nature and challenges of the disease as seen in high-income regions of the world, thereby giving a skewed view of the global cancer challenges. As the low- and middle-income regions of the world transition from communicable to non communicable disease patterns, there is a need for a corresponding paradigm shift, with increased emphasis on what the world needs to know about non communicable diseases, including cancer, where the disease is hitherto poorly documented. The main goal of the proposed book is to contribute to this outcomes.
