A menudo se hace referencia al AIKIDO como el Arte de la lucha del Caballero y, aunque no es un término del todo desconocido, pocas personas fuera del mundo de las Artes Marciales pueden distinguirlo de los otros métodos de autodefensa. El AIKIDO es, por tanto, un método de autodefensa basado en la coordinación de la energía. El ataque no existe en el Aikido ya que su principal objetivo es neutralizar la agresión e inmovilizar al atacante evitando en lo posible causarle heridas de gravedad. Para ello se requiere un gran conocimiento de la teoría y un gran dominio de la técnica. Sin embargo el Aikido es mucho más que una técnica de autodefensa. El Aikido, en sus niveles más altos es una auténtica Disciplina de Coordinación, un modo de armonizar las energías vitales del hombre, un modo de armonizar el carácter y la personalidad con el comportamiento cotidiano. El arte del Aikido posee en sus mismos fundamentos un riquísimo mensaje ético. De ahí que quién desee estudiar y practicar correctamente este noble arte debe lograr un alto nivel de integración de los poderes del cuerpo y de la mente o, lo que es lo mismo, combinar armoniosamente los medios físicos con los motivos éticos.
