The objectives of the study are to apply existing optimization techniques of modern control theory to compute aircraft trajectories and to define an approach to implement the results into an improved military air traffic management (ATM) system. The recommended concept provides positive control of the airspace by acquiring aircraft formations, determining aircraft positions, assigning landing priorities, calculating optimum trajectories subject to constraints, and transmitting steering commands to the aircraft. Although the concept is developed in terms of an aircraft carrier operational setting and the analysis concentrates on minimum fuel trajectories, the concept is generally applicable to military ATM problems such as Army helicopters or fixed wing aircraft in the vicinity of an airbase, and the analysis techniques are candidates for other aircraft optimization problems such as minimum time-to-climb or minimum time-to-descent trajectories. The purpose of this concept is to increase overall operational capability by increasing the overall range or time-over-target of aircraft, reducing the threat to aircraft carriers, and simplifying and automating ATC procedures for pilots and controllers. An analytical approach was developed in this study to reduce the complexity of the optimum trajectory calculation so that acceptable accuracy is achieved with minimal computer capacity. The optimum trajectories are computed by an iterative solution technique that converges rapidly to the final trajectory. (Author).

The general Mission Route Planning (MRP) Problem is the process of selecting an aircraft flight path in order to fly from a starting point through defended terrain to target(s), and return to a safe destination. MRP is a three- dimensional, multi-criteria path search. Planning of aircraft routes involves an elaborate search through numerous possibilities, which can severely task the resources of the system being used to compute the routes. Operational systems can take up to a day to arrive at a solution due to the combinatorial nature of the problem, which is not acceptable, because time is critical in aviation. Also, the information that the software is using to solve the MRP may become invalid during the computation. An effective and efficient way of solving the MRP with multiple aircraft and multiple targets is desired using parallel computing techniques. Processors find the optimal solution by exploring in parallel the MRP search space. With this distributed decomposition the time required for an optimal solution is reduced as compared to a sequential version. We have designed an effective and scalable MRP solution using a parallelized version of the A* search algorithm. Efficient implementation and extensive testing was done using MPI on clusters of workstations and PCs.

Optimal Path Planning And Trajectory Optimization For Multiple Aircraft Landing Using Rrt Algorithm And Pseudospectral Methods written by Krithika Mohan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with categories.

ABSTRACT: In this work, a method is presented for solving multiple aircraft landing problem using an RRT algorithm and pseudospectral method. The multiple aircraft landing problem involves generating a conflict-free trajectory for all the aircraft waiting to land on a single runway while avoiding obstacles. The trajectory generated for each aircraft should satisfy time-distance separation constraints between two successive aircraft landings and also the trajectories should not intersect. The multiple aircraft landing problem is solved as a multiple-phase optimal control problem using the open-source optimal control software GPOPS, and a nonlinear programming problem solver SNOPT. In order to improve computational efficiency, a rapidly exploring random tree (RRT) algorithm is used to generate initial guesses for the optimal control software. While the RRT algorithm determines the shortest path between the initial position and the target position, a novel algorithm has been presented which also combines other constraints like maintaining a minimum safe time-distance difference and avoiding intersecting flight paths; thus making it suitable for initializing the multiple aircraft landing problem.

The climb of turbojet aircraft is analyzed and discussed including the accelerations. Three particular flight performances are examined: minimum time of climb, climb with minimum fuel consumption, and steepest climb.

This thesis examines using an analytical reduced order formulation for trajectory generation for minimum time and terrain masking cases. First, pseudo-3D constant velocity equations of motion are used for path planning for a single vehicle. In addition, the inclusion of winds, moving targets and moving threats is considered. Then, this formulation is increased to using 3D equations of motion, both with a constant velocity and with a simplified varying velocity model. Next, the constant velocity equations of motion are expanded to include the simultaneous path planning of an unspecified number of vehicles, for both aircraft avoidance situations and formation flight cases.
