Learn the aircraft design process from a systems-engineering perspective, designed for both aspiring and practicing aerospace engineers Aircraft design incorporates a range of technological areas, including aerodynamics, flight dynamics, propulsion, and structure. Aircraft engineering design therefore requires techniques from systems engineering to integrate the requirements from these disparate areas into a coherent whole. There has never been a greater need for successful aerospace engineers to have a grasp of systems engineering and its applications in the field. Aircraft Design: A Systems Engineering Approach meets this need with a volume which takes the reader from conceptual design to detail design. Offering a systems engineering approach that weighs the needs of different aircraft components holistically, it provides readers with a practical look into the process of aircraft design. Now fully updated to reflect the latest industry developments, it promises to continue as an indispensable tool for modern students in the field. Readers of the second edition of Aircraft Design will also find: Brand new material on structural design, spoiler design, winglets, aircraft modification and modernization, and more Detailed discussion of emerging topics including all-electric aircraft design, VTOL aircraft design, and many others Guidance on the latest FAA requirements with a design impact Aircraft Design is ideal for senior undergraduate and graduate students interested in aircraft design, advanced aircraft design, and air vehicle design. The book may also be of interest to mechanical, industrial, and systems engineers working in the aerospace sector.

The Fourth Conference on Fibrous Composites in Structural Design was a successor to the First-to-Third Conferences on Fibrous Composites in Flight Vehicle Design sponsored by the Air Force (First and Second Conferences, September 1973 and May 1974) and by NASA (Third Conference, November 1975) which were aimed at focusing national attention on flight vehicle applications of a new class of fiber reinforced materials, the advanced com posites, which afforded weight savings and other advantages which had not been previously available. The Fourth Conference, held at San Diego, California, 14-17 November 1978, was the fi rst of these conferences to be jointly sponsored by the Army, Navy and Ai r Force together with NASA, as well as being the first to give attention to non-aerospace applications of fiber reinforced composites. While the design technology for aerospace applications has reached a state of relative maturity, other areas of application such as mi litary bridging, flywheel energy storage systems, ship and surface vessel components and ground vehicle components are in an early stage of development, and it was an important objective to pinpoint where careful attention to structural design was needed in such applications to achfeve maximum structural performance payoff together with a high level of reliability and attractive economics.

General Aviation Aircraft Design, Second Edition, continues to be the engineer's best source for answers to realistic aircraft design questions. The book has been expanded to provide design guidance for additional classes of aircraft, including seaplanes, biplanes, UAS, high-speed business jets, and electric airplanes. In addition to conventional powerplants, design guidance for battery systems, electric motors, and complete electric powertrains is offered. The second edition contains new chapters: - Thrust Modeling for Gas Turbines - Longitudinal Stability and Control - Lateral and Directional Stability and Control These new chapters offer multiple practical methods to simplify the estimation of stability derivatives and introduce hinge moments and basic control system design. Furthermore, all chapters have been reorganized and feature updated material with additional analysis methods. This edition also provides an introduction to design optimization using a wing optimization as an example for the beginner. Written by an engineer with more than 25 years of design experience, professional engineers, aircraft designers, aerodynamicists, structural analysts, performance analysts, researchers, and aerospace engineering students will value the book as the classic go-to for aircraft design. - The printed book is now in color, with 1011 figures and illustrations! - Presents the most common methods for conceptual aircraft design - Clear presentation splits text into shaded regions, separating engineering topics from mathematical derivations and examples - Design topics range from the "new" 14 CFR Part 23 to analysis of ducted fans. All chapters feature updated material with additional analysis methods. Many chapters have been reorganized for further help. Introduction to design optimization is provided using a wing optimization as an example for the beginner - Three new chapters are offered, two of which focus on stability and control. These offer multiple practical methods to simplify the estimation of stability derivatives. The chapters introduce hinge moments and basic control system design - Real-world examples using aircraft such as the Cirrus SR-22 and Learjet 45

Bonded Joints and Repairs to Composite Airframe Structures is a single-source reference on the state-of-the-art in this rapidly growing area. It provides a thorough analysis of both internal and external joints and repairs, as well as discussions on damage tolerance, non-destructive inspection, self-healing repairs, and other essential information not only on the joints and repairs themselves, but critically, on how they differ from bonds and repairs to metallic aircraft. Authors Wang and Duong bring a valuable combination of academic research and industry expertise to the book, drawing on their cutting-edge composite technology experience, including analytic and computational leadership of damage and repair planning for the Boeing 787. Intended for graduate students, engineers, and scientists working on the subject in aerospace industry, government agencies, research labs, and academia, the book is an important addition to the limited literature in the field. - Offers rare coverage of composite joints and repairs to composite structures, focusing on the state of the art in analysis - Combines the academic, government, and industry expertise of the authors, providing research findings in the context of current and future applications - Covers internal and external joints and repairs, as well as damage tolerance, non-destructive inspection, and self-healing repairs - Ideal for graduate students, engineers, and scientists working in the aerospace industry, government agencies, research labs, and academia
