"Aircraft collision with birds and other wildlife pose a significant risk to and cost the aviation industry hundreds of millions of dollars in damage and lost revenue every year. Most wildlife strikes occur with the airport environment; thus, the responsibility for mitigation falls upon the airport operator. Wildlife attractants that provide food, shelter, and water are often located in or adjacent to airports. This report presents information from literature and illustrative case examples on habitat management to deter wildlife at airports and manage risk to aviation. It is the third of three related syntheses of airport practice reports and completes the series wildlife risk management at airports." -- Preface.

ACRP Synthesis 39 provides direct wildlife population control techniques for reducing wildlife collisions with aircraft. In addition, the report summarizes the ecological foundation of wildlife population control and management. It is designed to supplement ACRP Synthesis 23: Bird Harassment, Repellent, and Deterrent Techniques for Use on and Near Airports. ACRP Synthesis 23 provides a synthesis of nonlethal wildlife control measures focusing on birds. The combined information from the two syntheses is designed to help airports develop an effective, integrated wildlife population control strategy and program.

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 3.71, Addis Ababa University (Developmental studies), course: Disaster and risk management, language: English, abstract: The study aimed to assess the effects of wildlife hazards at Bole International Airport, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Monitoring wildlife numbers and other wild animals, activity pattern and abundance within the study area generates a complimentary source of data, which is more suited for developing efficient hazard management mechanisms. Different wildlife’s commonly causes damage to aviation industry around the world. The study findings recorded about 70 species of wildlife including plants during the study period. The study results illustrated that some of the wildlife animals either living in or visiting the airport have often caused threats to aircraft operation in the airport directly or indirectly. Only between 2014 and 2018, 416 strikes were reported at the airport. The total amount of cost due to wildlife strike for the last six years was estimated at 4, 768,310.00 USD. Thus, it is recommended that Addis Ababa Bole International Airport should establish proactive systematic approach to deal with wildlife hazard than reactive or traditional approach.

This synthesis study is intended to provide a review of current airport and agency [primarily the U.S. Forest Service (USFS)] practices, policies, and procedures at airports called upon to support aerial wildland firefighting suppression efforts. Information used in this study was acquired through a review of the literature and interviews with ten airport operators (representing 13 airports), two commercial helicopter operators, and one regional fire center manager to gather insights on the current state of airport practices that support aerial wildland firefighting suppression efforts. The interviews followed a series of questions in areas such as community and economic matters, contracts, operations, and general business practices. While the interviews were structured, the interviewees were encouraged to freely discuss matters related to the topic of the study and to offer information on the subject that they believed was important--
