An abridged translation of “Afdhalus Solawat 'ala Saiyidis Sadat” by Ash-Shaikh Yusuf Ibn Isma'il An-Nabhani – about Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ – with foreword by Mudarris Ilyas Zakaria. The first part of the book consists of sections relating to the meaning, obligation and merits of Salawat based on transmitted texts from Quranic verses, Prophetic Hadiths and sayings of the Islamic scholars. These sections cite close to a hundred Prophetic Hadiths, mostly on the motivation and encouragement to Salawat abundantly, especially on Fridays, in order to obtain abundant and important benefits in both Dunia and Akhirah. The second part of the book consists of some of the best methods of Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ, including those transmitted from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself or the great 'Ulama such as Al-Imam Ash-Shafi'i, As-Saiyid Ahmad Al-Badawi and As-Saiyid Ahmad Ibn Idris Radhiyallahu 'Anhum. The book ends with a 50-verse poem on the summary of the Prophetic life in sequence from the creation of his light since before the beginning of time and until the continuous existence of his Prophetic life after his human departure. The author said in the introduction of this book, “My dear Muslim brothers who love the Prophet and who wish for Salawat upon him, help yourself with this book for the sake of salvation in your religion and your world. Regardless of how much you seek, you would almost certainly not find any compilation of a book like this.” The author, Ash-Shaikh Yusuf Ibn Isma'il An-Nabhani (1849-1932), was from the Levant and was a scholar of Al-Madzhab Ash-Shafi'i. He served as the Chief Justice of the Court of Human Rights in Beirut for over 20 years and was devoted to knowledge, literature, composing poems and writing books, especially in defence of his beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The translator, Muhammad Zulhikam Jamil, is a freelance Arabic-to-English script translator particularly in the field of Islamic knowledge. With an experience of over 10 years, majority of his translation works stem from his interest in themes relating to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

We are proud to present the Proceedings of the 2nd International Conference on Religion and Education 2020 (INCRE 2020). The Center for Research and Development of Ministry of Religious Affairs of Republic of Indonesia together together with other International organizations: International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNNISA) of Brunei, State Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, and Asosasi Ma’had Ali Indonesia (AMALI) hosted and organized the second annual conference in the general field of education and religion. The conference provided a forum for education professionals engaged in research and development to share ideas, interact with others, present their latest works, and strengthen the collaboration among academics, researchers and professionals. It was a single-track, highly selective conference attended by leading experts from academia, industry, and government. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, we organized the conference virtually in 2 days event 11-12 November 2020 with 4 keynote speakers: Prof Prof Azyumardi Azra from State Islamic University of Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof Abdul Wahab Abdul Rahman from International Islamic University Malaysia, Prof. Achmad Gunaryo from Research and Development, Ministry of Religious Affair, Indonesia, and Dr. Syamsi Ali from Jamaica Muslim Center, New York USA. The proceeding consisted of 34 accepted papers from the total of 82 submission papers. The proceeding consisted of 10 main areas of education and religion. They are: Modernizing madrasas in global contexts, Teacher and Education development, Student abilities in religion education, Education and Technology, World Class University in Indonesian religious university, Local wisdom and religion education, Citizenship in religion education, Religion and character education, Moderism in religion and education, and Islamic boarding school stretching. All papers have been scrutinized by a panel of reviewers who provide critical comments and corrections, and thereafter contributed to the improvement of the quality of the papers. We strongly believe that INCRE 2020 conference has become a good forum for all researcher, developers, practitioners, scholars, policy makers, especially post graduate students to discuss their understandings of current processes and findings, as well as to look at possibilities for setting-up new trends in Education and Religion. We also expect that the future INCRE conference will be as successful and stimulating, as indicated by the contributions presented in this volume.

The traditional Islamic boarding schools known as pesantren are crucial centres of Muslim learning and culture within Indonesia, but their cultural significance has been underexplored. This book is the first to explore understandings of gender and Islam in pesantren and Sufi orders in Indonesia. By considering these distinct but related Muslim gender cultures in Java, Lombok and Aceh, the book examines the broader function of pesantren as a force for both redefining existing modes of Muslim subjectivity and cultivating new ones. It demonstrates how, as Muslim women rise to positions of power and authority in this patriarchal domain, they challenge and negotiate "normative" Muslim patriarchy while establishing their own Muslim "authenticity." The book goes on to question the comparison of Indonesian Islam with the Arab Middle East, challenging the adoption of expatriate and diasporic Middle Eastern Muslim feminist discourses and secular western feminist analyses in Indonesian contexts. Based on extensive fieldwork, the book explores configurations of female leadership, power, feminisms and sexuality to reveal multiple Muslim selves in pesantren and Sufi orders, not only as centres of learning, but also as social spaces in which the interplay of gender, politics, status, power and piety shape the course of life.
