En 2010 y 2011 Alejandro Soriano Vallés dio a conocer al mundo documentos probatorios de la fidelidad con que los primeros biógrafos de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz relataron su vida. Contra las distorsiones introducidas por la crítica de los siglos XX y XXI, dichos papeles corroboraron la exactitud de las informaciones antiguas. Ahora el autor vuelve a presentar documentos inéditos que, ratificando los testimonios de los contemporáneos de la poetisa, coadyuvan a ordenar el panorama de estudios actual. Al amor de Sor Juana ofrece, efectivamente, dos cédulas esenciales para la correcta comprensión del inicio y final de la historia de la poetisa: una fe de bautismo que probaría que en realidad nació en 1651, y una petición a la Curia Romana fechada en 1694 en la cual ella solicita ser eximida de sus cargos monacales. Soriano Vallés acompaña el análisis de ambos documentos con cuatro artículos donde analiza aspectos centrales de la existencia de la Décima Musa, como su celda, el destino de su biblioteca, las relaciones con el arzobispo de México y su preparación cristiana a bien morir. El último capítulo, "Doncella del verbo. Diez años después", es la crónica de las vicisitudes de una década de la influyente biografía de la Fénix publicada originalmente en 2010 por el autor. Al amor de Sor Juana constituye, así, una fundamental obra para comprender tanto la vida de la monja como las incidencias del sorjuanismo contemporáneo.

La invisibilizacion de la mujer decimononica en el Ecuador puede entenderse como el resultado de lo que llamo en este libro la imaginacion patriarcal: un orden dominante de exclusiones y formas de disciplinamiento, control, censura, borradura, moralizacion y silenciamiento masculinos que naturalizaron y normalizaron la supuesta inferioridad femenina, haciendola formar parte del mismo sentido comun de la epoca. En este estudio analizo como, hacia el ultimo cuarto del siglo XIX, un grupo heterogeneo de mujeres escritoras nacionales y extranjeras, muchas de ellas librepensadoras catolicas, empezaron a participar de forma progresiva en la prensa ecuatoriana, desnaturalizaron su invisibilidad en el orden de la cultura letrada y cuestionaron abiertamente, en ciertos casos, las mismas desigualdades y exclusiones de genero existentes. La emergencia y participacion publica de estas mujeres educadas e intelectuales puede considerarse como un hito en la historia cultural del pais, no solo porque esta fue la primera generacion de escritoras que intervinieron en la prensa nacional, sino porque su presencia inusitada tuvo consecuencias significativas en la defensa de sus derechos educativos, sociales y politicos.

The seventeenth-century Mexican poet, playwright and nun, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, is best known for her secular works, most notably her damning indictment of male double standards, Hombres necios (Stupid Men). However, her autos sacramentales (allegorical one-act plays on the Eucharist) have received little attention, and have only been discussed individually and out of sequence. By examining them as a collection, in their original order, their meaning and importance are revealed. The autos combine Christian and classical ‘pagan’ imagery from the ‘Old World’ with the conquest and conversion of the ‘New World’. As the plays progress, the mystery of Christ’s ‘greatest gi ft’ to mankind is deciphered and is mirrored in Spain’s gi ft of the True Faith to the indigenous Mexicans. Sor Juana’s own image is also situated within this baroque landscape: presented as a triumph of Spanish imperialism, an exotic muse between two worlds.
