«Sono un Francese d’Oriente» scrive Joseph Roth da Odessa nel 1926. Ha già nostalgia di Parigi, meta l’anno precedente della sua fuga dalla Germania: Parigi è la «capitale del mondo» commentava allora, senza sapere che lì sarebbe vissuto quattordici anni e avrebbe scritto gran parte dei suoi libri. Chi non è stato a Parigi, del resto, è «solo un mezzo uomo», e diventare uomo completo significa, per Roth, godere di un’identità multipla nella città in cui gli ebrei orientali – affluiti dopo la guerra – «possono vivere come vogliono». Come i mirabili reportage da Vienna raccolti nel "Caffè dell’Undicesima Musa", anche questi feuilleton francesi sono racconti perfetti, increspati da un impagabile humour e da spiazzanti paradossi, gremiti di suoni e colori, odori e sapori: reti di nere cozze sgocciolanti e lupi di mare nel porto di Marsiglia; aromi di caffè, Pernod e acquavite nei bistrot parigini dove, dopo mezzanotte, si raccolgono gli esuli d’Europa; il bel mondo della Costa Azzurra con le sue vecchie cariche di brillanti e stuoli di cagnolini al seguito; l’alta stagione a Deauville con Monsieur Citroën che perde sempre al Casinò e regala un’automobile a ogni croupier; toreador vili e cialtroni nelle corride di Vienne (in cui le simpatie di Roth vanno naturalmente al toro); suonatori cosacchi di nostalgiche balalaiche; indossatrici che «seducono con caviglie moralmente corrotte» e femmine nude nei «luoghi di perdizione più ameni del mondo».

Il cinema è non solo presenza ricorrente nella narrativa di Roth, ma anche oggetto di splendidi feuilleton e recensioni – nell'insieme un centinaio di interventi, compresi per lo più fra il 1919 e l'inizio degli anni Trenta, di cui si offre qui una ampia e rappresentativa scelta. Appassionato di Buster Keaton, capace di liquidare il sentimentalismo di un'epoca intera, cultore di documentari e film etnologici, Roth sa essere sferzante come pochi e non risparmia perfidi strali a osannati registi, si chiamino Lang o Ejženstejn – né, ovviamente, ai più turgidi colossal: come "Messalina", contraddistinto da «una noia colossale», sicché, egli confessa, «abbiamo il nostro bel daffare a tenerci svegli. Ci sentiamo stanchi come dopo una festa di matrimonio o un banchetto funebre durati giorni e giorni». Quando visita i set, poi, è un grandioso, rutilante bestiario che si offre al suo sguardo implacabile: registi onnipotenti, operatori pedanti, comici presenzialisti, ricchi produttori, dive irresistibili e tiranniche che si scelgono ruoli cuciti sul loro corpo: senza che di quel corpo «il povero sceneggiatore abbia potuto cogliere anche un solo barlume». Ma quel che più conta è forse l'attenzione, acutissima e preveggente, rivolta sin dai primi testi alla capacità del cinema di creare simulacri: i meravigliosi prodigi dello schermo significano per Roth che la realtà, così ingannevolmente imitata, non era poi tanto difficile da imitare: «Sì, le persone reali, le persone vive, erano già diventate così evanescenti che le ombre sullo schermo dovevano per forza sembrare reali».

E non può smettere di essere se stesso senza precipitare.
