The long tradition of Kierkegaard studies has made it impossible for individual scholars to have a complete overview of the vast field of Kierkegaard research. The large and ever increasing number of publications on Kierkegaard in the languages of the world can be simply bewildering even for experienced scholars. The present work constitutes a systematic bibliography which aims to help students and researchers navigate the seemingly endless mass of publications. The volume is divided into two large sections. Part I, which covers Tomes I-V, is dedicated to individual bibliographies organized according to specific language. This includes extensive bibliographies of works on Kierkegaard in some 41 different languages. Part II, which covers Tomes VI-VII, is dedicated to shorter, individual bibliographies organized according to specific figures who are in some way relevant for Kierkegaard. The goal has been to create the most exhaustive bibliography of Kierkegaard literature possible, and thus the bibliography is not limited to any specific time period but instead spans the entire history of Kierkegaard studies.

Per anni, quando i suoi viaggi erano soprattutto quelli dell’autobus romano 60, da via Nomentana a piazza San Silvestro, Manganelli coltivò un sogno temerario: spingersi fino alle isole Fær Øer. Nel 1978, vincendo timori e angosce, con una valigia munita di tutto quanto a un frequent flyer non potrebbe che apparire inessenziale – un Dickens come amuleto e «blande mani chimiche» che sappiano confortare nei momenti difficili –, lo scrittore partì alla volta dell’arcaica Islanda, prima tappa della sua incursione nel grande Nord. L’esito è un reportage indimenticabile, che suscita nel lettore euforia e insieme turbamento: lo sguardo di Manganelli sembra infatti misteriosamente capace di svelare la segreta essenza dell’«isola pianeta», dove il mondo fisico – simile a un gigantesco cadavere pietrificato – è preumano, folle, criptico, quasi appartenesse alla «misteriosa araldica delle origini», e ispira dunque sgomento e paura; dove la solitudine è l’esperimento di «una infinita prigione senza via d’uscita», di una «perdita irreparabile»; dove l’ultima tribù europea, chiusa nel forziere di una lingua infrangibile, offre asilo agli indovini e alle fate. E un paesaggio sognato e folto di simboli è anche quello delle isole Fær Øer, finalmente visitate nel 1983: terra, come disse Auden a proposito dell’Islanda, non toccata dalla volgarità, votata al culto della solitudine, dei «popoli grigi» che vivono sottoterra, dei sogni premonitori, delle visioni profetiche.

Dalla quarta di copertina: Quando ho incontrato l’opera di Levinas, una questione si è posta naturalmente: quest’opera aveva qualcosa da apportare alla riflessione sulla politica o bisognava collocarla, al contrario, come si tendeva a fare, solo dalla parte dell’etica, considerando anche che vi era in questo filosofo, se non un disprezzo, almeno una mancanza di considerazione della politica? Molto presto, quest’ultima posizione mi è apparsa del tutto inesatta. Sono rimasto infatti impressionato dal testo che Levinas aveva dedicato alla critica dell’hitlerismo nel 1934 nella rivista Esprit, «Alcune riflessioni sulla filosofia dell’hitlerismo». Ciò che allora mi aveva colpito è che questo filosofo, che si diceva essere estraneo o indifferente ai problemi politici, aveva visto le cose con molta più perspicacia e precisione rispetto a dei pensatori che si consideravano specialisti della politica o delle lotte sociali e che, in realtà, non avevano assolutamente misurato ciò che rappresentava l’hitlerismo. A partire da quel momento, ho sempre pensato che Levinas avesse un senso del politico, come avrebbero confermato ai miei occhi alcuni testi di Difficile libertà. […] Presto, dunque, il respiro e il gesto di quest’opera mi sono apparsi non solamente nella loro aspirazione utopica, ma nel loro tentativo di pensare la politica secondo un altro paradigma rispetto a quelli classici. Questo è un libro che dice no alla visione dominante della filosofia. Filosofare non significa anzitutto argomentare. La filosofia non è la difesa di questa o quella posizione. No, la filosofia non deve risolvere problemi; la sua storia dimostra che non ne ha mai risolto nessuno, né è questo il suo scopo. Ma questo è anche un libro che dice sì a una concezione diversa della filosofia. Sì a tutti i suoi paragoni, analogie, aneddoti, associazioni, parallelismi, simmetrie, immagini, metafore ed esempi. Sì a tutto ciò che la filosofia è prima di tutto: immaginazione e creatività. Studiare filosofia significa fare un apprendistato per imparare a pensare. Oppure è nulla, ossia è mera istituzione. Questo libro, in fondo, è diretto contro l’istituzione filosofica che fa di tutto per impedirci di pensare. Ed è anche un omaggio ad alcuni di coloro che, ancora oggi, possono insegnarci a farlo.
