In 2008 ontstaat discussie over de vraag of de moord op Kerwin Duinmeijer op 20 augustus 1983 wel als racistisch te bestempelen is. Deze discussie wordt aangejaagd door een net verschenen documentaire over de dader. In 1983 bestond nauwelijks discussie over de vraag of hier sprake was geweest van een racistische moord. In april 2008 stelt Rita Verdonk tijdens de startbijeenkomst van haar beweging Trots op Nederland dat Nederlanders het helemaal niet in zich hebben te discrimineren en dus ook niet racistisch gewelddadig te zijn. ‘Wij zijn al eeuwenlang een gastvrij volk’, zo meent zij. Hoe komt het dat 25 jaar na dato het racistische karakter van de moord op Kerwin in twijfel wordt getrokken? En is het inderdaad waar dat discriminatie, laat staan racistisch geweld, geen onderdeel uitmaakt van de Nederlandse historie? In dit boek wordt aangetoond dat dit dominante Nederlandse zelfbeeld niet klopt. Racistisch geweld is een hardnekkig probleem in de hier besproken periode van 1950 tot en met 2009. In reactie op incidenten bestaat echter een grote neiging tot bagatelliseren en om het structurele karakter van dit geweld te ontkennen. En juist die overheidsreactie heeft grote invloed op de wijze waarop dit geweld de kop opsteekt en blijft voortduren. ‘Het boek stemt tot nadenken’, zo stelt Ronald Bandell, in 2009 burgemeester van Dordrecht en voorzitter van het Nederlands Genootschap van Burgemeesters, in zijn voorwoord. Hij spreekt van een conclusie die lang nadreunt en waarvan iedere bestuurder kennis zou moeten nemen.

This book offers a detailed and innovative study of the Dutch case of politics of citizenship and nationalism by focusing on public and political controversies in the crucial period of 1973–2015. By foregrounding the crucial role of performance and narration in public and political debates, this book shows how discourses of citizenship and nationhood are deeply shaped by established repertoires and long-lasting lines of disagreement about difference and belonging in the Netherlands. While change did occur within the Dutch context during this period, this book reveals that these transformations were not primarily driven by purportedly permissive and accommodating responses to immigration and cultural diversity. Instead, it unveils a Dutch landscape deeply marked by challenges related to race, democracy, and liberal exceptionalism. In doing so, the book contributes to ongoing debates in the study of citizenship, nationalism, and intellectual history around the merits and limitations of liberal politics of inclusion. It critically extends concepts and arguments in cultural pragmatics and problematizes the common hope that public debate may progressively resolve antagonisms over difference. With a focus on empirical research, the book meticulously reconstructs the emergence of national identity debates in recent decades and vividly portrays the dynamics and tensions of these public performances while dissecting their role in shaping the nation's identity and its boundaries. The book covers a crucial period of the European politics of citizenship and nationhood in which anti-immigrant politics, new modes of racism, and the bordering of Europe took shape. It locates the Dutch case within these developments and insists on the importance of historical continuity and narrative performance. De Haagse Schilderswijk is een van de vele Nederlandse volksbuurten waarover tegengestelde verhalen de ronde doen: ze worden herinnerd als een beruchte achterbuurt én als een gezellige volksbuurt, die in het Haagse geval in de jaren tachtig verdwenen zou zijn door de immigratie van gastarbeiders en andere nieuwkomers. In dit boek onderzoekt Diederick Klein Kranenburg de historische realiteit achter deze mythevorming. Daarmee levert hij een belangrijke bijdrage aan de sociale geschiedenis van Nederlandse stadswijken. Klein Kranenburg laat - onder meer op basis van tientallen interviews - zien dat de wijk vóór de jaren tachtig al verre van homogeen was en het vertrek uit de wijk aan de gang was voordat migranten de wijk in kwamen. Na 1945 ondergingen veel achterblijvers een proces van sociale zelfuitsluiting, waarbij ze steeds meer met de rug naar de samenleving kwamen te staan. Dit belemmerde de sociale mobiliteit.
