Leaving Terrorism Behind written by Tore Bjorgo and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-28 with History categories.

This new edited volume expands our understanding of the processes by which individuals and groups disengage from terrorism. While there has been a growing awareness of the need to understand and prevent processes of radicalization into terrorism, disengagement and deradicalization from terrorism have long been neglected areas in research on terrorism. This book uses empirical data to explore how and why individuals and groups disengage from terrorism, and what can be done to facilitate it. The work also presents a series of case studies of disengagement programmes, from Colombia, northern Europe, Italy, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, comparing and assessing their various strengths and weaknesses. In light of the lessons learned from these cases, this book describes and explains the potential for new developments in counter-terrorism. This book will be of great interest to all students of terrorism studies, war and conflict studies, international security and politics in general, as well as professionals in the field of counter-terrorism.

Islamic Reform And Conservatism written by Indira Falk Gesink and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-11-30 with Religion categories.

The famed reform debates at al-Azhar Madrasa in nineteenth-century Cairo, one of the most influential centres of religious study in Sunni Islam, were enormously influential for twentieth-century Islamic thought. Here Indira Gesink offers a revisionist history of these debates over curricular and administrative reforms, and challenges our understanding of the struggle between Islamic reform and conservatism. It has been assumed that famous Islamic modernists such as Muhammad 'Abduh instigated the reform movement and the ideas of modern religious life that emanated from al-Azhar and permeated Islamic society, a development that religious conservatives opposed. Gesink draws on obscure, but important, archival sources, legal manuals and ephemeral journals to tell the other side of the story, and to illustrate the important contributions of conservative scholars to the evolution of twentieth-century Sunni Islam. Conservative 'opponents of reform' engaged many of the same issues as reformers and actively pursued alternative visions of reform. In fact, texts of enacted reforms show greater attention to concerns of conservatives than to the original programmes of Muhammad 'Abduh, and conservatives led 'ulama committees that generated and implemented reforms. Had religious conservatives not contributed to the reforms of the early twentieth century, these reforms would have lacked the crucial cultural assonance that permitted them to become rooted in public life, in an environment of rising nationalist anti-British sentiment which saw 'Abduh as a willing agent of colonialists. The debates ultimately catalyzed public acceptance of secularism, Islamic modernism and radical Islamism. They also led to the practice of lay legal interpretation, the proliferation of competing interpretations within Sunni Islam and the rise of militant sects. By drawing on obscure archival sources and restoring conservative voices to the debate, 'Islamic Reform and Conservatism' presents a more nuanced picture of the al-Azhar debates and the forces that shaped Islamic religious life in the twentieth century than has become the norm. Its original scholarship and fresh analysis make this book indispensable for all those interested in the modern Middle East, religious history, Islamic studies, radical Islam and militancy, secularism, modernism and religious reform.

The Struggle Of The Shi Is In Indonesia written by Zulkifli and has been published by ANU E Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-06 with Religion categories.

The Struggle of the Shi‘is in Indonesia is a pioneering work. It is the first comprehensive scholarly examination in English of the development of Shiism in Indonesia. It focuses primarily on the important period between 1979 and 2004 – a period of nearly a quarter of a century that saw the notable dissemination of Shi’i ideas and a considerable expansion of the number of Shi’i adherents in Indonesia. Since Islam in Indonesia is overwhelmingly Sunni, this development of Shiism in a predominantly Sunni context is a remarkable phenomenon that calls for careful, critical investigation. There is also an important examination of the principal ideas underlying the Madhab Ahl al-Bayt, the Imamate and Imam Madhi, Ja‘fari jurisprudence and ritual piety. Appropriately, in his discussion, Zulkifli provides a succinct outline of contrasts with Sunni ideas and practice. He also examines the publishing efforts that underpinned the dissemination of Shi’i ideas and the founding of IJABI (Ikatan Jamaah Ahlul Bait Indonesia) in July 2000 for the propagation of Ahl al-Bayt teachings. Given the Indonesian context, Zulkifli is also concerned with Sunni reactions to these Shi’i developments – a story that continues to unfold to the present. This book as a work of great value and significance for the continuing understanding of the richness and complexity of Indonesian Islam.

Shi I Sectarianism In The Middle East written by Elisheva Machlis and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-09-17 with Social Science categories.

The eruption of violent sectarianism in Iraq following the US invasion in 2003 brought the question of Sunni-Shi'i relations in the country to the forefront of the international public agenda. It also strengthened the popular belief that contemporary Shi'ism is inherently sectarian. Yet several decades earlier, Ayatollah Khomeini had declared an Islamic revolution and downplayed its Shi'i origins and links. So what is the true orientation of Shi'i Islam in the contemporary era and how did modernisation alter its sectarian affiliation? This book contends that early Shi'i reformist thought set the foundations for a more universal-oriented Shi'ism. Prominent reformists in the first half of the twentieth century from the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf in Iraq and from the Shi'i centres in Southern Lebanon played a significant role in the renewal of Shi'ism and laid the groundwork for its reinvention in the modern era. Exploring this shift towards a more ecumenical perception of Islam, Elisheva Machlis here provides a fresh perspective on inter-sectarian relations in contemporary Iraq and illuminates the intellectual roots of the Islamic revolution, by examining networks of Shi'i scholars such as Mu?ammad ?usayn K?shif al-Ghi??' and Mu?sin al-Am?n al-'?mil?, operating within a more globalised Muslim world. Drawing on the experiences of early Shi'i reformists, such as 'Abd al-?usayn Sharaf al-D?n al-M?saw? in Lebanon and Mu?ammad Jaw?d Mughniyya in Damascus, this book gives new insight on the future of inter-Muslim relations at a time of growing inter-sectarian contention, from the Iran-Iraq war to the post-2003 Sunni-Shi'i conflict in Iraq and al-Qa'ida's anti-Shi'i message, taking into account questions of theology, historiography, jurisprudence and politics which all played a vital role in the transition to the contemporary era. The author here analyses the broad scholarly connections between Iran, Iraq and Lebanon in the twentieth century, while debating paramount questions of leadership, identity and group membership in the development of modern Shi'ism. Examining the relationship between intellectual thought and socio-political development in the region, this book provides a new perspective concerning the future of an increasingly globalised Muslim world and will prove essential reading for students and specialists.

YASIN T. AL-JIBOURI is an Iraqi-American writer, author, editor and translator who has as many as 54 titles to his credit. Details of these works and of his other activities are provided in the Preface to this book as well as front cover images of some of these works on pages 46-75. He holds a Masters' degree in English from an American university, and he taught English in his home country, Iraq, and in Saudi Arabia and the United States. Presently, he is writing his major work titled Allah: The Concept of God in Islam in two volumes as well as A Dictionary of Islamic Terms, also in two volumes. This book is an attempt to bring Christians and Muslims of the world closer to each other, to bridge the gap between, to establish an alliance among them, so that they may together be able to face the challenges of the present and of the future. One of these challenges is extremism, the new menacing plague that is endangering the lives of so many people from both creeds and from others. Knowledge, right and accurate knowledge, is powerful, and such power can be put to good use: to clear misconceptions, remove doubts and suspicions and establish trust and understanding among followers of both creeds. Philosophically, this book cites many first-hand references to prove that, unfortunately, present day Christianity, regardless of any of its many denominations, has truly distanced itself from the original word preached by Jesus Christ. It traces the times and circumstances when concepts of "son of God", "Holy Trinity" and "salvation" crept into Christianity and distorted the pristine faith brought by Christ. At the same time, it highlights Qur'anic verses that beautifully paint a portrait of Jesus Christ and his saintly virgin mother, Mary, testifying to the truth brought by Christ, to his miracles, guidance and truth. The information is presented in a flowing style that captures the attention of any reader, including one who just is looking for a good story to enjoy.

In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. Glory is to Allah Lord of the Worlds, Whose praise should precede all writing and every speech! May the blessings of Allah rest on Muhammad, His Prophet and Apostle, on his family and companions by whose guidance error I escaped! Before the reader is a priceless book written by Ayatullah Sayyid Abul Fadl bin Rida al- Borqei al - Qummi titled: Naqd al - Muraja'at (a critique of The Right Path). The book; the right path, was written by Sayyid Abdul Husain Sharafuddin al - Musawi, an Iraqi Shia scholar who settled in Lebanon, for the purpose of teaching the Shia that the truth to the righteousness of their creed are supported by Ahlus Sunnah texts and for the purpose of converting the ignorant, unsuspecting Ahlus Sunnah to Shia creed or at least to put doubt in their minds with their belief in Islam Many Muslim scholars have written replies and critiques to the book written by Abdul Husain (The Right Path), each one taking a particular form of methodology. The one before the reader is different in methodology to all other critiques and above all it was written by a former Shia scholar who has reached the position of an authority (Mujtahid) in the Shia Imamiyyah sect; and none can inform you about a thing other than a learned, expert in it.The book; The Right Path, is one of the books that the Shia Imamiyyah gives a lot of attention this days. It was translated into many languages and thousand of copies were printed and distributed free of charge. Today Shia counts this book among their main references. They gave more attention to this book because their four main books (of hadith and jurisprudence) and other books are full of things that blackened the Shia Imamiyyah, Ithna Ashriyyah sect for they contained a lot of shameful and corrupt creeds and it is impossible to say that what are narrated in those books is the religion of members of the Prophet's household. Thus, the book "The Right Guidance" and other books that are calling and inviting to Shiism hide the creed, superstitions, fairy tales, fables, exaggerations, and extremist creeds that those core Shia books contained. The author of this book, al - Borqei (may Allah have mercy on him), has mentioned a little of the contents of one of those books - which is al - Kafi by Kulaini - in this book. The author explained why he wrote the book thus: After all these situations one of those who love me sent to me a book titled Muraja'at (correspondences or letters - the book was translated into English under the title: The Right Path), he asked me to look into it and to sieve from it illusions from facts, it's scum from the reality. The book was written by Sayyid Abdul Huasain Sharafudden one of the scholars of Shia Imamiyyah, he claimed that the Shia sect is the school of thought of the progeny, people of the prophet's household. He composed the book into questions which he allegedly said were asked by a Sunni scholar and which he himself answered. The author of the book displayed distress and sorrow that each group of the Muslims sects held tenaciously to its creed and shows obstinacy against the other sect saying: "The reality of those brothers who are joined by one principle and one creed unfortunately display violent disagreements...and this induced distress and sorrow! So what is the way out?" He continued his digression saying: " I entered Egypt ...and met by luck one of it's greatest scholars...I complained to him about my feelings and he made similar complaints to me...that was a blessed period between us to ponder over ways by which Allah will unite our words, and mend with it the cracks in the Islamic community. Among the principles we agreed upon are that the two sect; Shia and Ahlus Sunnah are Muslims ...and their differences are not in the principles and the fundamentals...and there is no disagreement between them other than what occur between scholars who apply their independent judgments.
