Why We Build written by Rowan Moore and has been published by Pan Macmillan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-30 with Architecture categories.

Buildings are driven by human emotions and desires; hope, power, money, sex, the idea of home. In Why We Build Rowan Moore explores the making of buildings from conception to inhabitation and reveals the paradoxical power of architecture: it looks fixed and solid, but is always changing in response to the lives around it. Moving across the globe and through history, through works of folly, beauty, spectacle, and subtlety, Moore gives a provocative and iconoclastic view of what makes architecture, why it matters, and why we find it fascinating. You will never look at a building in the same way again.

Rivals In The Gulf written by David H. Warren and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-25 with Religion categories.

Rivals in the Gulf: Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Abdullah Bin Bayyah, and the Qatar-UAE Contest Over the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis details the relationships between the Egyptian Shaykh Yusuf al-Qaradawi and the Al Thani royal family in Qatar, and between the Mauritanian Shaykh Abdullah Bin Bayyah and the Al Nahyans, the rulers of Abu Dhabi and senior royal family in the United Arab Emirates. These relationships stretch back decades, to the early 1960s and 1970s respectively. Using this history as a foundation, the book examines the connections between Qaradawi’s and Bin Bayyah’s rival projects and the development of Qatar’s and the UAE’s competing state-brands and foreign policies. It raises questions about how to theorize the relationships between the Muslim scholarly-elite (the ulamā) and the nation-state. Over the course of the Arab Spring and the Gulf Crisis, Qaradawi and Bin Bayyah shaped the Al Thani’s and Al Nahyan’s competing ideologies in important ways. Offering new ways for academics to think about Doha and Abu Dhabi as hegemonic centers of Islamic scholarly authority alongside historical centers of learning such as Cairo, Medina, or Qom, this book will appeal to those with an interest in modern Islamic authority, the ulamā, Gulf politics, as well as the Arab Spring and its aftermath.

History of Qatar. The Economy, The Politics, Government, People, Environment and Tourism. Great were among the best known kings who led warring armies in the 2,500 years before the birth of Christ. During the centuries of Greek and Roman domination, the gulf region was of limited interest to the major powers, but the area's importance as a strategic and trading center rose with the emergence of Islam in the seventh century. The caliphate's military strength was concentrated at Hormuz. Strategically sited at the mouth of the gulf, its authority extended over ports and islands of the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf. The strategic importance of Hormuz, however, did not survive the appearance of Western powers, initially the Portuguese who came to the gulf in the late fifteenth century after Vasco da Gama's discovery of the route to India via the Cape of Good Hope. The Ottomans and the Iranians also tried to dominate the gulf but faced opposition from local tribes in Bahrain and Muscat, reluctant to cede authority over their territories, which by then were the most important areas on the coast. Increasing British involvement in India beginning in the late eighteenth century quickened British interest in the gulf region as a means of protecting the sea routes to India

"We NRIs are made to sweat in places that friends back home have no clue about." The portly colleague from IT department fittingly described her state... In his homeland, an expatriate is looked up in awe, with 'look how far he has gone' or 'minting money abroad' becoming clichd sentences. The reality, however, is much different. Doha! Diary of a Delhi-O-holic is an honest portrayal of an expatriate's lifestyle in the Middle East, that is monotonous, to say the least. The author, an expat himself, has flattened the overhyped word. The 16 short stories, written in an engaging and satirical style, are bound to captivate the heart and mind of the readers. In the Indian context, the word expat equates with those acronyms 'NRI' or 'PIO', that are considered hallowed. The memoir summarises the journey of the protagonist in a melting pot of cultures with oil, sports, cyberspace, and exchange rate thrown in. A must read for those, seeking that elusive adrenaline rush off the shelves. It will leave an indelible mark on your soul that yearns for an escape route from your mundane existence. Maybe, it's time you stop seeing the expats through rose-coloured glasses.

Jeff Koons Lost In America written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-08-31 with categories.

Koons by himself: the new definitive overview, featuring the artist's commentary on his works and career This handsomely designed volume brings together more than 60 of the artist's most iconic sculptures and paintings along with new productions and recently completed works. Edited by curator Masimilliano Gioni, the book focuses in particular on Koons' art as seen in relation to contemporary American culture. With an aesthetics of abundance remaining a constant throughout his career, Koons has composed a "fantasy America ... custom-made from art and schmaltz and emotions"--to use Warhol's description of his own interpretation of American culture. Through the inclusion of source materials, personal recollections and biographical narratives by Koons himself, the book reads each of Koons' celebrated series through the prism of his biography and the ways in which his individual history intersects with that of his country and culture. The publication composes an unconventional view of Jeff Koons and his work, retracing the personal influences and cultural histories that have shaped Koons' art. Published to accompany a major exhibition in Qatar, the catalog features an interview with Koons by the exhibition's curator along with essays by Armenian American art critic Dodie Kazanjian and Qatari American writer and artist Sophia Al Maria. Jeff Koons(born 1955) is best known for his work that engages with pop culture in dynamic and unexpected ways, such as his famous large-scale stainless steel sculptures of balloon animals. His work has been exhibited worldwide since his career took off in the 1980s and his pieces frequently break auction sales records.
