A thorough, accessible, and heavily illustrated history of Alabama Alabama: The Making of an American State is itself a watershed event in the long and storied history of the state of Alabama. Here, presented for the first time ever in a single, magnificently illustrated volume, Edwin C. Bridges conveys the magisterial sweep of Alabama’s rich, difficult, and remarkable history with verve, eloquence, and an unblinking eye. From Alabama’s earliest fossil records to its settlement by Native Americans and later by European settlers and African slaves, from its territorial birth pangs and statehood through the upheavals of the Civil War and the civil rights movement, Bridges makes evident in clear, direct storytelling the unique social, political, economic, and cultural forces that have indelibly shaped this historically rich and unique American region. Illustrated lavishly with maps, archival photographs, and archaeological artifacts, as well as art works, portraiture, and specimens of Alabama craftsmanship—many never before published—Alabama: The Making of an American State makes evident as rarely seen before Alabama’s most significant struggles, conflicts, achievements, and developments. Drawn from decades of research and the deep archival holdings of the Alabama Department of Archives and History, this volume will be the definitive resource for decades to come for anyone seeking a broad understanding of Alabama’s evolving legacy.

From the "Trail of Tears" to Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn, the narrative of American history is incomplete without the inclusion of the Native Americans that lived on the continent before European settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since the first contact between natives and settlers, tribes like the Sioux, Cherokee, and Navajo have both fascinated and perplexed outsiders with their history, language, and culture. In Charles River Editors' Native American Tribes series, readers can get caught up to speed on the history and culture of North America's most famous native tribes in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. Though they are not as well known as tribes like the Sioux or Cherokee, the Creek are one of the oldest and most important Native American tribes in North America. With roots that tie them to the Ancient Moundbuilders, the Creek were one of the most established groups in the Southeastern United States, and came to be known as one of the Five Civilized Tribes. It's also believed that the Creek were the first natives encountered by Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto's historic expedition in the mid-16th century. The Creek became known as one of the Five Civilized Tribes for quickly assimilating aspects of European culture, but in response to early European contact, the Muscogee established one of the strongest confederacies in the region. Despite becoming a dominant regional force, however, infighting brought about civil war in the early 19th century, and they were quickly wrapped up in the War of 1812 as well. By the end of that fighting, the Creek were compelled to cede millions of acres of land to the expanding United States, ushering in a new era that found the Creek occupying only a small strip of Alabama by the 1830s.

Sweet Home Alabama — the skies are blue and the history is deep. Its distinctive culture stands as a pinnacle of the Deep South with a football team that has won more than 15 national championships, tasty local specialties like pulled pork and fried dill pickles, and a southern drawl that’s sweet as Sorghum molasses. But there’s more to Alabama than what meets the eye. Before Alabama became one of the shining stars on the American flag, its history had already begun. Alabama 200 years ago was a very different place. Before Alabama was even a speck in the eyes of white settlers, native populations thrived upon its rich red soil. But when Europeans landed in the New World, everything changed and the gears of modern history began to turn. While Alabama seems to be a place to sleepily lounge in the sun and watch the world rush by, its own history was anything but lethargic. Once the ball toward statehood began rolling in Alabama, little could stop it. Alabama seemingly had a hand in every major event in U.S. history, from the Revolutionary War to the Civil Rights movement to current events with history in the making, and everything in between. In “Events That Changed the Course of History: The Story of Alabama Becoming a State 200 Years Later”, you’ll learn how this underdog of a state that is often written off has a unique and ever-changing history that will surely leave you wanting to visit and see the history for yourself.
