Four decades after he first burst onto the international art scene in the early 1980s, Albert Oehlen (born 1954) remains among the most influential and controversial painters of the present. Operating between figuration and abstraction with vigor and energy, Oehlen relentlessly critiques painting's history, its clichés and its relationship to the imagery of the advertising and pop industries--all within the medium itself (rather than in another art form). Reproducing 110 works, this volume, designed by Heimo Zobernig, takes something of an artist's book approach to Oehlen's oeuvre, emphasizing its methodological complexity, vitality and conflicts. Alongside an interview between Oehlen and fellow painter Daniel Richter, this catalogue contains conversations on the implications of Oehlen's work between Rochelle Feinstein and Kerstin Stakemeier, and between Hal Foster and Achim Hochdörfer.

What happens when musicians make use of ideas and strategies from the art world? And what kind of pictures result when painters are influenced by music? To be interested in other people's lives, to follow the unknown, to copy it, to use it in one's own work--in short, to cross-map between the worlds of music and the visual arts: this is the subject of HYPER! A Journey into Art and Music curated by Max Dax, the former editor-in-chief of Spex and Electronic Beats. The book will include classic works such as Peter Saville's ground-breaking album cover for New Order's 1983 masterpiece Power, Corruption and Lies, and the narrative, minimalist imagery of Emil Schult on which the cover of Kraftwerk's 1974 album, Autobahn, was based, and Cyprien Gaillard's acclaimed 3D installation, Night Life, from 2015. The mutual influences between music and art will be illustrated with examples by Albert Oehlen and Scooter, Thomas Scheibitz and the Melvins, as well as Daniel Blumberg. Photographs and video works by Andrea Stappert, Sven Marquardt, Andreas Gursky, The KLF, Mark Leckey, and Bettina Pousttchi will lend the book a documentary dimension. The book is narratively underpinned by numerous background interviews that Max Dax conducted with the participants in HYPER! over the past thirty years.

Permission To Laugh written by Gregory H. Williams and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-12 with Art categories.

Permission to Laugh explores the work of three generations of German artists who, beginning in the 1960s, turned to jokes and wit in an effort to confront complex questions regarding German politics and history. Gregory H. Williams highlights six of them—Martin Kippenberger, Isa Genzken, Rosemarie Trockel, Albert Oehlen, Georg Herold, and Werner Büttner—who came of age in the mid-1970s in the art scenes of West Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg. Williams argues that each employed a distinctive brand of humor that responded to the period of political apathy that followed a decade of intense political ferment in West Germany. Situating these artists between the politically motivated art of 1960s West Germany and the trends that followed German unification in 1990, Williams describes how they no longer heeded calls for a brighter future, turning to jokes, anecdotes, and linguistic play in their work instead of overt political messages. He reveals that behind these practices is a profound loss of faith in the belief that art has the force to promulgate political change, and humor enabled artists to register this changed perspective while still supporting isolated instances of critical social commentary. Providing a much-needed examination of the development of postmodernism in Germany, Permission to Laugh will appeal to scholars, curators, and critics invested in modern and contemporary German art, as well as fans of these internationally renowned artists.
