On 16 May 1811 a combined British, Portuguese and Spanish force commanded by the British general Beresford met the French army under Soult at Albuera in southern Spain. What followed was one of the bloodiest and most controversial battles of the Peninsular War. Yet despite the battle's significance in the wider campaign to expel Napoleon's armies from Spain, the story of Albuera has rarely received the coverage accorded to other battles of the war. In this ground-breaking book, Michael Oliver and Richard Partridge seek to set the historical record straight. They examine the carnage of Albuera in unprecedented detail, and they give a lucid account of the circumstances and the conflicting allied and French strategies that gave rise to this awful confrontation. They also offer vivid portraits of the personalities and military skills of the notable commanders who took part.

On 16 May 1811, the small town of Albuera was the setting for one of the Peninsular War's most bloody and desperate battles. A combined Spanish, British and Portuguese force of more than 30,000 men, under the command of Lord Beresford, stubbornly blocked the march of the French Field Marshal Soult, who was trying to reach the fortress of Badajoz, 12 miles north. Beresford, who defended himself with his bare hands against a Polish lancer, was victorious, but at the cost of 6,000 Allied deaths and 7,000 French in just four hours. The battle is best known for the Fusilier Brigade's charge, made famous by Sir William Napier's melodramatic description, and because of the tenacity of the 57th Foot that earned them the nickname the 'Die Hards'. This compelling new book fills this gap by using authentic primary sources to tell the story of the battle as completely as possible and dispels long-standing myths. The book also brings to life the human dimension of the story by using first-person recollections to describe experiences on and off the battlefield. The battle's drama is intensified by the circumstances of the fighting, which led to extremes of behavior ranging from incomprehensible valor to rank cowardice. The book balances the traditional Anglocentric bias by paying equal attention to Spanish, Portuguese, French, Polish and German soldiers who fought there.

On 16 May 1811, the small town of Albuera was the setting for one of the Peninsular War’s most bloody and desperate battles. A combined Spanish, British and Portuguese force of more than 30,000 men, under the command of Lord Beresford, stubbornly blocked the march of the French field marshal Soult, who was trying to reach the fortress of Badajoz, twelve miles to the north. However, after suffering losses of up to 7,000 men during the fighting, Wellington declared that, ‘Another such battle will ruin us’. One British regiment, the 57th Foot, suffered casualties of more than 50 per cent. Similarly, the French fought with enormous tenacity, and sustained almost equally heavy losses. The stories from those who fought in the battle on both sides make for both chilling and inspiring reading. These contemporaneous accounts include letters, diaries, official correspondence, army records, maps, newspaper reports and memoirs totaling over 100 contemporary accounts of the battle. They range from the comprehensive after-action reports of the British, Portuguese, Spanish and French commanders to casualty and prisoner lists and to recollections of individual soldiers from all the combatant armies. The purpose of this book is to tell the story of the battle exclusively by way of these primary sources, with English translations for foreign language sources, along with, in each case, a commentary identifying the source and its context. The heart of the work will be a vast number of first-hand accounts providing astonishing details of the intense fighting including the heroism of the Spanish troops, the massacre of Colborne’s brigade by Polish lancers, Beresford’s near-fatal indecisiveness, and the heroic charge of the Fusilier brigade. This presentation allows readers avid for detailed historical information to draw their own conclusions about how the events of the battle unfolded.

The battle of Albuera was fought between the forces of France, led by Marshal Soult, and the combined forces of Britain, Portugal and Spain under Sir William Beresford. The battle, named after the Spanish village about which the fighting took place, cost the lives of 13,000 men. The French effort, to disrupt Beresford's siege of the town of Badajoz was unsuccessful, but this was not a great allied victory. Nonetheless, Albuera became one of the most famous of Peninsular battles. Peter Edwards has written a detailed new history of the battle, and the other battles that comprised Wellington's fourth campaign. Making extensive use of rare eyewitness accounts, this book places the reader at the heart of a thrilling narrative.

Wellington S Operations In The Peninsula 1808 1814 written by Lewis William George Butler and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Volume 1-Invasion to the Battle of Albuera, 1811 The author of this history of Wellington's Peninsular War, Captain Lewis Butler of the Rifles, declares himself at the outset to be a disciple of William Napier and an enthusiastic student of that 'incomparable classic' for which Napier is principally known. His objective is to provide a 'concise' history of the conflict for those who may lack the capacity or time to engage with Napier's massive opus. Readers should note that the author actually sells himself somewhat short. In fact, Butler's work encompasses the entire war-not confining itself only to Wellington's involvement as his title suggests. Within the two substantial volumes-concise being a relative term-of his history he gives us his own narrative of the war in an easy to read but thorough and engaging style. Modern students have often taken the criticism (by others) of Butler's mentor Napier as 'given wisdom.' Much controversy concerning Napier's history originated from those involved in the war, who had personal reasons for taking exception to his perspectives, this did not therefore mean that he was inevitably wrong. The view that his is an overworked reference in no way detracts from its value-particularly for those not familiar with it. Furthermore, Butler points out that his history contains 'certain points of military detail which are omitted from or in all events not prominently brought forward' by Napier in his work. The coy tone and often apologetic conventions of 19th century prefaces are often not in the best service of the reader in enabling one to appreciate the full merits of the work in hand. Modern readers may be assured that Butler's is an excellent, original account in its own right and not-irrespective of the value of such a work-an edited rewrite of Napier. It will both interest general readers and be a valuable addition to every library of the history of the Napoleonic Wars. Volume one provides a background to the conflict, the campaigns to Rolica, Vimeiro, Corruna, Saragossa, Talavera, Torres Vedras, Ciudad Rodrigo, the Coa, Busaco, Barossa, Fuentes d'Onoro and all the events leading to Albuera in 1811-essentially the first three years of the war in detail. Available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
