This book sheds light on the complexity of medieval German literary culture as it evolved in the course of the thirteenth century (c. 1220-1920) by analysing the attitudes of narrative poets towards the issue of authorship. It describes the various ways in which vernacular writers could address the theme of their own authorship within their literary works, and explores the tensions that arose between such authorial strategies on the one hand and their subsequent manuscript transmission on the other.

Englische Version: The "Secretum Secretorum", a 10th century pseudo-Aristotelian compendium, compiled in Syrian (Persian-influenced) circles of hermetic thought, is a kind of mirror for princes in the form of a letter to Alexander the Great, with many pieces of advice interspersed with all sorts of miracle stories. It deals with the virtues of rulers, the art of war and physiognomy but also contains extensive teachings on health. It was completely translated into German for the first time in 1282 by Hiltgart von Hürnheim, a Cistercian nun in Zimmern (c. 1255 - after 1299) who came from a noble family in Franconia's Ries. Hiltgart's rather literal translation followed the Latin model of her cousin Rudolf, a Cistercian monk in Kaisheim. This manuscript from the middle of the 15th century comes from the Cistercian Seligenthal convent in Landshut, which was subordinate to the Abbot of Kaisheim, like Zimmern. Hiltgart's translation still lived on in the 16th century in prints by Johann Bämler (1531) and Heinrich Stainer in Augsburg (1530 and 1532). // Autor: Peter Czoik // Datum: 2016

// Autor: Peter Czoik // Datum: 2016

Das Ich Im Bild written by Ursula Peters and has been published by Böhlau Verlag Köln Weimar this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Literary Criticism categories.

Martin Waldseem Ller S Carta Marina Of 1516 written by Chet Van Duzer and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-10-09 with History categories.

This open access book presents the first detailed study of one of the most important masterpieces of Renaissance cartography, Martin Waldseemüller’s Carta marina of 1516. By transcribing, translating into English, and detailing the sources of all of the descriptive texts on the map, as well as the sources of many of the images, the book makes the map available to scholars in a wholly unprecedented way. In addition, the book provides revealing insights into how Waldseemüller went about making the map -- information that can’t be found in any other source. The Carta marina is the result of Waldseemüller’s radical re-evaluation of what a world map should be; he essentially started from scratch when he created it, rejecting the Ptolemaic model and other sources he had used in creating his 1507 map, and added more descriptive texts and a wealth of illustrations. Given its content, the book offers an essential reference work not only on this map, but also for anyone working in sixteenth-century European cartography.

Beards And Texts written by Sebastian Coxon and has been published by UCL Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-08 with Literary Criticism categories.

Beards and Texts explores the literary portrayal of beards in medieval German texts from the mid-twelfth to the early sixteenth centuries. It argues that as the pre-eminent symbol for masculinity the beard played a distinctive role throughout the Middle Ages in literary discussions of such major themes as majesty and humanity. At the same time beards served as an important point of reference in didactic poetry concerned with wisdom, teaching and learning, and in comedic texts that were designed to make their audiences laugh, not least by submitting various figure-types to the indignity of having their beards manhandled. Four main chapters each offer a reading of a work or poetic tradition of particular significance (Pfaffe Konrad’s Rolandslied; Wolfram von Eschenbach’s Willehalm; ‘Sangspruchdichtung’; Heinrich Wittenwiler’s Ring), before examining cognate material of various kinds, including sources or later versions of the same story, manuscript variants and miniatures and further relevant beard-motifs from the same period. The book concludes by reviewing the portrayal of Jesus in vernacular German literature, which represents a special test-case in the literary history of beards. As the first study of its kind in medieval German studies, this investigation submits beard-motifs to sustained and detailed analysis in order to shed light both on medieval poetic techniques and the normative construction of masculinity in a wide range of literary genres.
