The Triumph of an Accursed Lineage analyses kingship in Castile between 1252 and 1350, with a particular focus on the pivotal reign of Alfonso XI (r. 1312–1350). This century witnessed significant changes in the ways in which the Castilian monarchy constructed and represented its power in this period. The ideas and motifs used to extoll royal authority, the territorial conceptualisation of the kingdom, the role queens and the royal family played, and the interpersonal relationship between the kings and the nobility were all integral to this process. El reinado de Alfonso XI es uno de los más relevantes del bajo Medievo castellano. Alfonso accedió al trono cuando apenas contaba con un año de edad, por lo que los primeros años de su reinado estuvieron presididos por las luchas de los aspirantes a la regencia (los infantes don Juan el de Tarifa, don Juan Manuel y don Pedro), en la que la reina doña María de Molina jugaría aún un papel principal. Superadas las convulsiones internas, y en el marco de la crisis generalizada del siglo xiv peninsular (luchas banderizas nobiliarias, hambrunas, peste negra...), el rey, hombre inteligente y sutil, centró todos sus esfuerzos en la consolidación del poder real frente a la nobleza y a las oligarquías urbanas. Tampoco descuidó la política exterior principalmente con Portugal , y dio un paso decisivo en la cuestión del Estrecho. Sus reformas en la administración castellana a nivel central, territorial y local, así como su celo por impartir justicia, le valieron el sobrenombre de el Justiciero.
