The idea of this book originated from two series of lectures given by us at the Physics Department of the Catholic University of Petr6polis, in Brazil. Its aim is to present an introduction to the "algebraic" method in the perturbative renormalization of relativistic quantum field theory. Although this approach goes back to the pioneering works of Symanzik in the early 1970s and was systematized by Becchi, Rouet and Stora as early as 1972-1974, its full value has not yet been widely appreciated by the practitioners of quantum field theory. Becchi, Rouet and Stora have, however, shown it to be a powerful tool for proving the renormalizability of theories with (broken) symmetries and of gauge theories. We have thus found it pertinent to collect in a self-contained manner the available information on algebraic renormalization, which was previously scattered in many original papers and in a few older review articles. Although we have taken care to adapt the level of this book to that of a po- graduate (Ph. D. ) course, more advanced researchers will also certainly find it useful. The deeper knowledge of renormalization theory we hope readers will acquire should help them to face the difficult problems of quantum field theory. It should also be very helpful to the more phenomenology oriented readers who want to famili- ize themselves with the formalism of renormalization theory, a necessity in view of the sophisticated perturbative calculations currently being done, in particular in the standard model of particle interactions.

This volume is a natural continuation of the book Algebraic Renormalization, Perturbative Renormalization, Symmetries and Anomalies, by O Piguet and S P Sorella, with the aim of applying the algebraic renormalization procedure to gauge field models quantized in nonstandard gauges. The main ingredient of the algebraic renormalization program is the quantum action principle, which allows one to control in a unique manner the breaking of a symmetry induced by a noninvariant subtraction scheme. In particular, the volume studies in-depth the following quantized gauge field models: QED, Yang-Mills theories and topological models (the Chern-Simons and the BF model) in the context of axial-like gauges.

This volume is the outcome of a CIRM Workshop on Renormalization and Galois Theories held in Luminy, France, in March 2006. The subject of this workshop was the interaction and relationship between four currently very active areas: renormalization in quantum field theory (QFT), differential Galois theory, noncommutative geometry, motives and Galois theory. The last decade has seen a burst of new techniques to cope with the various mathematical questions involved in QFT, with notably the development of a Hopf-algebraic approach and insights into the classes of numbers and special functions that systematically appear in the calculations of perturbative QFT (pQFT). The analysis of the ambiguities of resummation of the divergent series of pQFT, an old problem, has been renewed, using recent results on Gevrey asymptotics, generalized Borel summation, Stokes phenomenon and resurgent functions. The purpose of the present book is to highlight, in the context of renormalization, the convergence of these various themes, orchestrated by diverse Galois theories. It contains three lecture courses together with five research articles and will be useful to both researchers and graduate students in mathematics and physics.

Wavelets And Renormalization written by Guy Battle and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Science categories.

WAVELETS AND RENORMALIZATION describes the role played by wavelets in Euclidean field theory and classical statistical mechanics. The author begins with a stream-lined introduction to quantum field theory from a rather basic point of view. Functional integrals for imaginary-time-ordered expectations are introduced early and naturally, while the connection with the statistical mechanics of classical spin systems is introduced in a later chapter.A vastly simplified (wavelet) version of the celebrated Glimm-Jaffe construction of the 3 quantum field theory is presented. It is due to Battle and Federbush, and it bases an inductively defined cluster expansion on a wavelet decomposition of the Euclidean quantum field. The presentation is reserved for the last chapter, while the more basic aspects of cluster expansions are reviewed in the chapter on classical spin systems.Wavelets themselves are studied from two different points of view arising from two disciplines. The mathematical point of view covers the basic properties of wavelets and methods for constructing well-known wavelets such as Meyer wavelets, Daubechies wavelets, etc. The physical point of view covers the renormalization group formalism, where there is a close connection between wavelets and Gaussian fixed points. The book is heavily mathematical, but avoids the theorem-proof-theorem-proof format in the interests of preserving the flow of the discussion i.e., it is written in the style of an old-fashioned theoretical physics book, but the major claims are rigorously proven. The minor themes of the book are reflection positivity, the combinatorics of cluster expansions, and the issue of phase transitions themes which have nothing to do with wavelets, but which provide necessary cultural background for the physical context."

This volume deals with canonical quantization, Feynman rules and renormalization of Yang-Mills theories in algebraic non-covariant gauges (typically axial and light-cone gauges). The material is self-contained and presented in a basic manner according to a personal style representative of a long lasting activity in the field. Emphasis is always placed on the underlying basic concepts of Quantum Field Theory, even when particular examples are treated, details and the related difficulties are thoroughly discussed. The value of the book goes beyond the specificity of its subject.

This book covers a wide range of phenomena in the natural sciences dominated by notions of universality and renormalization. The contributions in this volume are equally broad in their approach to these phenomena, offering the mathematical as well as the perspective of the applied sciences. They explore renormalization theory in quantum field theory and statistical physics, and its connections to modern mathematics as well as physics on scales from the microscopic to the macroscopic. Information for our distributors: Titles in this series are co-published with the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences (Toronto, Ontario, Canada).

The main focus of this thesis is the mathematical structure of Group Field Theories (GFTs) from the point of view of renormalization theory. Such quantum field theories are found in approaches to quantum gravity related, on the one hand, to Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) and on the other, to matrix- and tensor models. Background material on these topics, including conceptual and technical aspects, are introduced in the first chapters. The work then goes on to explain how the standard tools of Quantum Field Theory can be generalized to GFTs and exploited to study the large cut-off behaviour and renormalization group transformations of the latter. Among the new results derived in this context are a proof of renormalizability of a three-dimensional GFT with gauge group SU(2), which opens the way to applications of the formalism to quantum gravity.

This collection of expository articles grew out of the workshop ``Number Theory and Physics'' held in March 2009 at The Erwin Schrodinger International Institute for Mathematical Physics, Vienna. The common theme of the articles is the influence of ideas from noncommutative geometry (NCG) on subjects ranging from number theory to Lie algebras, index theory, and mathematical physics. Matilde Marcolli's article gives a survey of relevant aspects of NCG in number theory, building on an introduction to motives for beginners by Jorge Plazas and Sujatha Ramdorai. A mildly unconventional view of index theory, from the viewpoint of NCG, is described in the article by Alan Carey, John Phillips, and Adam Rennie. As developed by Alain Connes and Dirk Kreimer, NCG also provides insight into novel algebraic structures underlying many analytic aspects of quantum field theory. Dominique Manchon's article on pre-Lie algebras fits into this developing research area. This interplay of algebraic and analytic techniques also appears in the articles by Christoph Bergbauer, who introduces renormalization theory and Feynman diagram methods, and Sylvie Paycha, who focuses on relations between renormalization and zeta function techniques.
