Central to this collection of papers are new developments in the general theory of localization of spaces. This field has undergone tremendous change of late and is yielding new insight into the mysteries of classical homotopy theory. The present volume comprises the refereed articles submitted at the Conference on Algebraic Topology held in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Spain, in June 1994. Several comprehensive articles on general localization clarify the basic tools and give a report on the state of the art in the subject matter. The text is therefore accessible not only to the professional mathematician but also to the advanced student.

This is the second volume of the procedings of the second European Congress of Mathematics. Volume I presents the speeches delivered at the Congress, the list of lectures, and short summaries of the achievements of the prize winners. Together with volume II it contains a collection of contributions by the invited lecturers. Finally, volume II also presents reports on some of the Round Table discussions. This two-volume set thus gives an overview of the state of the art in many fields of mathematics and is therefore of interest to every professional mathematician. Contributors: Vol. I: N. Alon, L. Ambrosio, K. Astala, R. Benedetti, Ch. Bessenrodt, F. Bethuel, P. Bjørstad, E. Bolthausen, J. Bricmont, A. Kupiainen, D. Burago, L. Caporaso, U. Dierkes, I. Dynnikov, L.H. Eliasson, W.T. Gowers, H. This volume Studies in Memory of Issai Schur was conceived as a tribute to Schur's of his tragic end. His impact on great contributions to mathematics and in remembrance of mathematicians Representation Theory alone was so great that a significant number of Researchers (TMR) Network, in the European Community Training and Mobility Orbits, Crystals and Representation Theory, in operation during the period (1997-2002) have been occupied with what has been called Schur theory. Consequently, this volume has the additional purpose of recording some of the significant results of the network. It was furthermore appropriate that invited contributors should be amongst the speakers at the Paris Midterm Workshop of the network held at Chevaleret during 21-25 May, 2000 as well as those of the Schur Memoriam Workshop held at the Weizmann Institute, Rehovot, during 27-31 December 2000. The latter marked the sixtieth anniversary of Schur's passing and took place in the 125th year of his birth.

The concept of symmetric space is of central importance in many branches of mathematics. Compactifications of these spaces have been studied from the points of view of representation theory, geometry, and random walks. This work is devoted to the study of the interrelationships among these various compactifications and, in particular, focuses on the martin compactifications. It is the first exposition to treat compactifications of symmetric spaces systematically and to uniformized the various points of view. The work is largely self-contained, with comprehensive references to the literature. It is an excellent resource for both researchers and graduate students.

Groups Of Homotopy Self Equivalences And Related Topics written by Ken-ichi Maruyama and has been published by American Mathematical Soc. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Mathematics categories.

This volume offers the proceedings from the workshop held at the University of Milan (Italy) on groups of homotopy self-equivalences and related topics. The book comprises the articles relating current research on the group of homotopy self-equivalences, homotopy of function spaces, rational homotopy theory, classification of homotopy types, and equivariant homotopy theory. Mathematicians from many areas of the globe attended the workshops to discuss their research and to share ideas. Included are two specially-written articles, by J.W. Rutter, reviewing the work done in the area of homotopy self-equivalences since 1988. Included also is a bibliography of some 122 articles published since 1988 and a list of problems. This book is suitable for both advanced graduate students and researchers.

Module Theory written by Alberto Facchini and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-06-16 with Mathematics categories.

This expository monograph was written for three reasons. Firstly, we wanted to present the solution to a problem posed by Wolfgang Krull in 1932 [Krull 32]. He asked whether what we now call the "Krull-Schmidt Theorem" holds for ar tinian modules. The problem remained open for 63 years: its solution, a negative answer to Krull's question, was published only in 1995 (see [Facchini, Herbera, Levy and Vamos]). Secondly, we wanted to present the answer to a question posed by Warfield in 1975 [Warfield 75]. He proved that every finitely pre sented module over a serial ring is a direct sum of uniserial modules, and asked if such a decomposition was unique. In other words, Warfield asked whether the "Krull-Schmidt Theorem" holds for serial modules. The solution to this problem, a negative answer again, appeared in [Facchini 96]. Thirdly, the so lution to Warfield's problem shows interesting behavior, a rare phenomenon in the history of Krull-Schmidt type theorems. Essentially, the Krull-Schmidt Theorem holds for some classes of modules and not for others. When it does hold, any two indecomposable decompositions are uniquely determined up to a permutation, and when it does not hold for a class of modules, this is proved via an example. For serial modules the Krull-Schmidt Theorem does not hold, but any two indecomposable decompositions are uniquely determined up to two permutations. We wanted to present such a phenomenon to a wider math ematical audience.

Gromov S Compactness Theorem For Pseudo Holomorphic Curves written by Christoph Hummel and has been published by Birkhäuser this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

Mikhail Gromov introduced pseudo-holomorphic curves into symplectic geometry in 1985. Since then, pseudo-holomorphic curves have taken on great importance in many fields. The aim of this book is to present the original proof of Gromov's compactness theorem for pseudo-holomorphic curves in detail. Local properties of pseudo-holomorphic curves are investigated and proved from a geometric viewpoint. Properties of particular interest are isoperimetric inequalities, a monotonicity formula, gradient bounds and the removal of singularities. A special chapter is devoted to relevant features of hyperbolic surfaces, where pairs of pants decomposition and thickthin decomposition are described. The book is essentially self-contained and should also be accessible to students with a basic knowledge of differentiable manifolds and covering spaces.
