Bonifacio Montejo y Robledo, de buena memoria, que habia consagrado al estudio de Villalobos lar - O gos y sin duda fructiferos trabajos; pero despues de aceptar el encargo de nuestra sociedad, sintio escrupulos de incom petencia, porque el Sr. Montejo habia estudiado a Villalobos como medico, y mas especialmente como sifilografo, y para la obra que iba a publicarse era lo principal estudiarlof como literato y aun como poeta; no se por que creyeron 'mis companeros que yo seria a proposito para desempenar este encargo, pues no paso de ser un mero aficionado, asi si las ciencias de la vida, como 'i la amena - literatura: no pude, a pesar de mis reparos, lograr que me excusaran de este trabajo, y otros muchos que sobre mi han cargado en losultimos anos, han sido parte para que se retrase mas de lo justo la publicac10n de este volumen de nuestra coleccion, del cual va a poderse decir con mucha razon, por las que ya dejo apuntadas, que ha salido a luz tarde y con dano. Ni siquiera he podido, para compensar en algo tales inconvenientes, consagrar al desempeno de mi tarea el tiempo y la paciencia que hubieran sido menester, porque el asunto, si no se reduce a la mera impresion del manuscrito cpiado del que existe en el Museo Britanico, se presta, o, por mejor decir, convida a largas investigaciones y a comen tari05 muy extensos; pues Villalobos ocupo lugar muy a proposito en la Corte para conocerla y darnosl'a a conocer en'epoca tan interesante y gloriosa para Espana como fueron los reinados de los senores Reyes Catolicos D. Fernando y D.& Isabel, y de su insigne nieto el Emperador Carlos V. Ademas, la vida del famoso medico despierta grandisima curiosidad que no satisfacen las breves noticias de Morejon y de Chinchilla, las que dan en su traduccion de Ticknor los Sres. This book explores the manifold ways of knowing—and knowing about— preternatural beings such as demons, angels, fairies, and other spirits that inhabited and were believed to act in early modern European worlds. Its contributors examine how people across the social spectrum assayed the various types of spiritual entities that they believed dwelled invisibly but meaningfully in the spaces just beyond (and occasionally within) the limits of human perception. Collectively, the volume demonstrates that an awareness and understanding of the nature and capabilities of spirits—whether benevolent or malevolent—was fundamental to the knowledge-making practices that characterize the years between ca. 1500 and 1750. This is, therefore, a book about how epistemological and experiential knowledge of spirits persisted and evolved in concert with the wider intellectual changes of the early modern period, such as the Protestant Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment.
