Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) nasceu, viveu e morreu na pequena cidade de Amherst, Perto de Boston, numa das regiões de tradição mais conservadora dos Estados Unidos do século XIX, e passou os últimos vinte anos em completa reclusão. Ao arrumar o quarto de Emily depois que ela morreu, sua irmã Lavinia encontrou uma gaveta cheia de pápeis em desordem. Eram dezenas de fascículos costurados e folhas soltas com uma grande quantidade de poemas, dos quais apenas dez haviam sido publicados, anonimamente e por iniciativa de terceiros, em periódicos regionais. Disposta a divulgar a obra da irmã, cuja magnitude até então desconhecia, Lavinia entrou em contato com Thomas higginson, influente crítico literário da época (hoje lembrado apenas por sua associação com a obra de Dickinson), que durante trinta anos renegou todos os versos que Emily lhe submetera, e uma obscura escritura, Mebel todd, que por cinco anos havia frequëntado a sua casa sem nunca chegar sequer a vê-la. Dessa parceria pouco promissora surgiu a publicação póstuma de um volume de poemas, seguida em pouco tempo de outras duas edições aumentadas, em vista da inesperada acolhida. Daí em diante a obra poética de Emily Dickinson, composta de quase 1.800 poemas, passou a ser reverenciada por uma crescente legião de leitores fiéis e críticos exigentes. Este livro, que registra a passagem dos 120 anos de sua morte, reúne 245 traduções, entre as quais, pela primeira vez, a de todos os “poemas do Brasil” (quatro poemas nos quais ela se refere ao nosso país). É a mais extensa coletânea já publicada entre nós da obra desta que é hoje considerada uma das maiores expressões poéticas de língua inglesa de todos os tempos e que ocupa um merecido lugar no cânon literário universal.
