The films of the New French Extremity have been reviled by critics but adored by fans and filmmakers. Known for graphically brutal depictions of sex and violence, the subgenre emerged from the French art-house scene in the late 1990s and became a cult phenomenon, eventually merging into the horror genre where it became associated with American torture porn. Decidedly French in flavor, the films seek to reveal the dark side of French society. This book provides an in-depth study of New French Extremity, focusing on such films as Trouble Every Day (2001), Irreversible (2002), Twentynine Palms (2003), High Tension (2003) and Martyrs (2008). The author explores the social implications of cinematic cruelty presented not as "violent films" but as "films about violence."

This book is a biography of my late Aunt Alice, who, like millions of other people, developed Alzheimer's disease. I was responsible for her the last few years of her life after she could no longer live alone. She had quite a sense of humor and could also be difficult. I "inherited" my aunt in 1996 and so much has changed since then. I've included many helpful websites and also provide a comparison of costs in the different kinds of facilities that care for Alzheimer's patients. I also describe the increase in costs from 1996 to the present for each of these kinds of facilities. Barbara Larsen, the author who endorsed my book, has written a book about early-stage Alzheimer's and she provides her readers with detailed activities to decelerate Alzheimer's disease in the early stages. At the end of the book, I discuss the causes of Alzheimer's and how the theory seems to be changing as to the cause. Anyone who has ever had a loved one with dementia and/or Alzheimer's disease will benefit from and enjoy reading this book. Ruth D. Watkins-Leech grew up in the town of Butte, Montana, and attended Longfellow Grade School for eight years and graduated from Butte High School. She was on the journalism staff in high school and had her own column, titled Ruthie's Rumors. Right out of high school, Ruth worked as a dental assistant for several years. She went back to college in her late twenties and received an Associate in Science degree in Respiratory Therapy. She interned at Stanford Hospital and then worked for several years at Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California. In her fifties, she traveled extensively with her late husband and wrote travel articles for a magazine titled Lifestyles. Ruth is now retired but enjoys teaching Tai Chi at Gold Country Community Center in Grass Valley, California. She also teaches at an assisted living facility and a convalescent hospital in Grass Valley. All of her compensation is donated to the Gold Country Community Center and to the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Cancer Center. Ruth is a breast cancer survivor. This is her first book. Enjoy

“This might well be my favorite Rader-Day so far: a brilliant premise intriguingly developed, totally believable characters and a climax that took my breath away.” — Ann Cleeves, New York Times bestselling author of The Shetland and Vera Series From the author of the Edgar Award®-nominated Under A Dark Sky comes an unforgettable, chilling novel about a young woman who recognizes the man who kidnapped her as a child, setting off a search for justice, and into danger. Most people who go missing are never found. But Alice was the lucky one... As a child, Alice was stolen from her backyard in a tiny Indiana community, but against the odds, her policeman father tracked her down within twenty-four hours and rescued her from harm. In the aftermath of the crime, her family decided to move to Chicago and close the door on that horrible day. Yet Alice hasn’t forgotten. She devotes her spare time volunteering for a website called The Doe Pages scrolling through pages upon pages of unidentified people, searching for clues that could help reunite families with their missing loved ones. When a face appears on Alice’s screen that she recognizes, she’s stunned to realize it’s the same man who kidnapped her decades ago. The post is deleted as quickly as it appeared, leaving Alice with more questions than answers. Embarking on a search for the truth, she enlists the help of friends from The Doe Pages to connect the dots and find her kidnapper before he hurts someone else. Then Alice crosses paths with Merrily Cruz, another woman who’s been hunting for answers of her own. Together, they begin to unravel a dark, painful web of lies that will change what they thought they knew—and could cost them everything. Twisting and compulsively readable, The Lucky One explores the lies we tell ourselves to feel safe.

There She Goes Again interrogates the representation of ostensibly powerful women in transmedia franchises, examining how presumed feminine traits—love, empathy, altruism, diplomacy—are alternately lauded and repudiated as possibilities for effecting long-lasting social change. By questioning how these franchises reimagine their protagonists over time, the book reflects on the role that gendered exceptionalism plays in social and political action, as well as what forms of knowledge and power are presumed distinctly feminine. The franchises explored in this book illustrate the ambivalent (post)feminist representation of women protagonists as uniquely gifted in ways both gendered and seemingly ungendered, and yet inherently bound to expressions of their femininity. At heart,There She Goes Again asks under what terms and in what contexts women protagonists are imagined, envisioned, embodied, and replicated in media. Especially now, in a period of gradually increasing representation, women protagonists demonstrate the importance of considering how we should define—and whether we need—feminine forms of knowledge and power.

Travelling performers struggle to impress rowdy western towns in Anything Goes, and ambitions clash as Montana miners fight for control of The Richest Hill on Earth; two novels from six-time Spur Award winner Richard S. Wheeler. Anything Goes The cowboys, gold miners, outlaws, gunmen, prostitutes, and marshals who populate the Wild West never see much big-city entertainment. Those western towns are too wild and rowdy for entertainers to enter, let alone perform in them. All that is about to change. Though the towns are starved for entertainment, the Follies struggles to fill seats as it grinds from town to town. Just when the company is desperate for fresh talent, a mysterious young woman astonishes everyone with her exquisite voice. The Richest Hill on Earth The city of Butte looks like a cancerous mélange of smoky mine boilers and rudely constructed sheds when newspaperman John Fellowes Hall arrives in 1892. But Butte is the place to get rich. It is also a city full of stories, perfect for a journalist looking to make a name for himself. As an employee of mining titan William Andrews Clark, Hall will find himself deeply involved in the best story of them all: the fight among the Copper Kings. This is the story of their struggle as well as the story of the ordinary people—the miners, their wives and children, the journalists, and even the psychics—trying to make their fortunes on the richest hill on earth. This edition of the book is the deluxe, tall rack mass market paperback. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
