Este livro é o resultado de nossa relação com Timor-Leste, onde fomos professores visitantes na Universidade Nacional de Timor-Leste (UNTL) no primeiro semestre de 2012. A nossa atuação na UNTL foi junto à Faculdade de Educação, Artes e Humanidades, onde lecionamos para o curso de licenciatura em química e físicas disciplinas de língua portuguesa, química e de formação pedagógica. Os quatro primeiros capítulos, “Timor-Leste - a autodeterminação de uma nação”, “Apontamentos bibliográficos sobre a história de Timor-Leste”, “Meio ambiente, manejo de recursos naturais e desenvolvimento em Timor-Leste” e “Políticas Educacionais timorenses, cooperação e lusofonia” são textos inéditos que, em conjunto, fornecem uma visão geral sobre a localização geográfica, aspectos históricos e informações sobre recursos naturais e sobre a economia deste país, assim como a situação educacional e os projetos de cooperação nesta área. Os demais textos desta obra já foram publicados em outros veículos. Optamos por reuni-los aqui para termos um portfólio de nossa produção bibliográfica, facilitando o acesso à estas e para evitar que não se perca o acesso a tais publicações, já que os links originais podem expirar ou estes materiais serem retirados do ar. O conteúdo das obras já publicadas foi mantido como o original, assim, a obra apresenta pontos de sobreposição das informações, por exemplo, em alguns capítulos temos informações introdutórias sobre o Timor-Leste, como a localização e aspectos históricos. O texto “Acesso a Água: desenvolvimento humano, saúde e educação”, publicado na revista Global Education Magazine, busca dar uma visão geral sobre a relação entre acesso à água e o desenvolvimento sustentável. Neste, informações sobre Timor-Leste são trazidas à tona como estudo de caso para a análise desenvolvida. Os textos “Desafios da docência no ensino superior por professores brasileiros em Timor-Leste”, “Meio ambiente e o manejo de recursos naturais em Timor-Leste”, “Dez anos da restauração da independência de Timor-Leste” e “13 anos do referendo em Timor-Leste” são de pequena extensão e foram publicados em dois jornais on-line: Jornal da Ciência, ligado à Sociedade Brasileira para o Progresso da Ciência – SBPC, e Ecodebate. Estes são textos informativos e opinativos, representando os primeiros esforços para uma produção bibliográfica relacionada a nossa estádia em solo timorense e a relação que criamos com o país. Os últimos quatro textos do livro são artigos voltados para a área educacional publicados em periódicos. Os textos “A Cooperação Internacional na Universidade Nacional de Timor-Leste: contribuições para a melhoria da educação e desenvolvimento timorense” e “A alfabetização científica em ações educativas sobre meio ambiente e química na Universidade Nacional de Timor-Leste” tratam das ações de ensino de química e língua portuguesa que desenvolvemos na Universidade Nacional de Timor-Leste. O texto “Conhecendo o entorno da escola em diferentes contextos: Mariana, Minas Gerais-Brasil e Díli, Timor-Leste” traz uma discussão sobre possibilidades pedagógicas voltadas para ações de educações ambientais no qual se busca relacionar Mariana, no Brasil, e Díli, em Timor-Leste. Por fim, no texto “Arquivo e museu da resistência timorense: memória coletiva e a construção da identidade nacional em Timor-Leste” é descrita uma ação de visita monitorada que realizamos, assim como, o papel que esta instituição museal tem para a construção de uma história oficial em Timor-Leste.

Wehali defines itself as the ritual centre of the island of Timor. As a ritual centre, Wehali continues to be the residence of a figure of traditional authority on whom, in the 18th century, the Dutch conferred the title of Kaiser (Keizer) and to whom the Portuguese gave the title of Emperor (Imperador). At one time, Wehali was the centre of a network of tributary states, which both the Dutch and Portuguese regarded as paramount to the political organisation of the island. This book is a study of Wehali in its contemporary setting as it continues to maintain its rituals and traditions. Significantly, Wehali is a ‘Female’ centre and its ‘Great Lord’ is considered to be a ‘Female’ lord. Whereas other Timorese societies are organised along male lines, in Wehali, all land, all property, all houses belong to women. Men are exchanged as husbands in marriage. Wehali is thus considered to be the ‘husband-giver’ to the surrounding realms on the island that look to its inner power as their source of life.

Following the historic 1999 popular referendum, East Timor emerged as the first independent sovereign nation of the 21st Century. The years since these momentous events have seen an efflorescence of social research across the country drawn by shared interests in the aftermath of the resistance struggle, the processes of social recovery and the historic opportunity to pursue field-based ethnography following the hiatus of research during 24 years of Indonesian rule (1975-99). This volume brings together a collection of papers from a diverse field of international scholars exploring the multiple ways that East Timorese communities are making and remaking their connections to land and places of ancestral significance. The work is explicitly comparative and highlights the different ways Timorese language communities negotiate access and transactions in land, disputes and inheritance especially in areas subject to historical displacement and resettlement. Consideration is extended to the role of ritual performance and social alliance for inscribing connection and entitlement. Emerging through analysis is an appreciation of how relations to land, articulated in origin discourses, are implicated in the construction of national culture and differential contributions to the struggle for independence. The volume is informed by a range of Austronesian cultural themes and highlights the continuing vitality of customary governance and landed attachment in Timor-Leste.

In the second edition of this study of religion and kinship in East Timor, David Hicks argues that reproductive rituals and ideas regarding fertility and gender direct the notion that for the Tetum-speaking people of Caraubalo suku, in the district of Viqueque, life and death derive from the same source. This source is the world of the ancestral ghosts (the mate bein). The soul of a person (the klamar mate) who has died becomes transformed by ritual action into an agency for life-affirming fertility, that is, an ancestral ghost, and it is from the ancestors that fertility, which sustains life down the generations, originates. Incorporated into this complex of ideas regarding life, fertility, gender, and death, are two recreational institutions, cockfighting and kick-fighting, which Dr. Hicks argues are ritualized manifestations of fertility and infertility respectively, as well as gendered aspects of the sacred (lulik) and secular (sau) worlds. In addition to contributing to the comparative study of ritual and indigenous notions of reproduction, the second edition of Tetum Ghosts and Kin: Fertility and Gender in East Timor, provides an ethnographic portrait of village life among a people whose traditions were about to be abruptly devastated by war and conquest. In a summary retrospect he outlines the events that overtook the East Timorese between the time of his first period of fieldwork and East Timors becoming a nation on May 20, 2002, and concludes with a brief description of the present condition of Caraubalo.
